All too common, in my experience.
Going to the movies is a total crap shoot. You're just as likely to get a knowledgeable, respectful audience as you are to get a collection of screaming, unsupervised children, obnoxious adults having loud, personal conversations, and a thousand points of cell phone screen light popping up at irregular intervals during the screening.
I love the energy and shared cultural experience that only a crowded movie theater can offer, but I know every time I step through those doors I'm rolling the dice.
