Forums - Sales - Xbox 360 vs Playstation 3, Who Won?

Although console sales are important. Software sold is where all the money is made.

Neither.

Nintendo "won" last gen.

2nd place was pretty much a tie.

I think the Wii will prove to be their most costly mistake, despite being their highest selling home console.

I completely agree.

It still did win the gen however.

ps3 easy, better 1st party by a landslide imo, sold a bunch more consoles... because rrod, there was probably 50Million actual 360 buyers instead of 82m..there is no indication that the xone will overtake america.. its not happening, its (ps4)the it console, much like the 360 was last gen and much like the ps2 was the gen before when it pile-drived the xbox/gamecube probably combined... ps4 has the popularity, the better value for the price, the power, the better multiplat games.... how is ms gonna overcome that to take over america again???

360 won. It took almost the entire generation for the successor of the PS2(best selling console ever) to pass that thing sales wise, and that's even without considering the amount of money MS made with the 360 while Sony had losses till 2010 thanks to PS3.

in terms of slapping the other - 360 because how many people PS lost
overall - PS3 because of better line up of games in the end as well as carrying over all the positive things into the successor (much better late life support) and also for outselling the 360 for many years now

Agree, plus Sony had way more new EXCLUSIVE IPS, and didnt required timed exclusive games like the 360 did with Mass Effect, Bioshock, Star Ocean, Tales of Vesperia and Ninja Gaiden... (some of those games ended up coming with exclusive content on the PS3).

PS3 - better line-up and lasted longer than the 360 in terms of releases.

All of them did. There's a policy in Playstation systems that doesn't allow games that had previously released in other consoles unless they bring extra content not found on those versions.

What exactly is the criteria for "winning" and "losing?"

It's hard for me to say. PS3 got the same numbers in one less year, and will probably sell longer and thus sell significantly more, and is still getting games that I'm interested in being released EXCLUSIVELY on it. So for me, PS3 won. I do agree that XBox was more innovative last gen, but it really did nothing for me, as I don't care about Kinect or online. Sony lost in America, but they won Europe, they did pretty well competing with the Wii in Japan (and are still selling, so it's only going to get closer), and definitely won the Rest of World category. Winning one territory that consists of one country doesn't seem like winning at all to me, at least not overall. Also, I don't think Microsoft made more money with the 360 than Sony with the PS3. The PS3 sold for a loss for a while, and that hurt Sony, but the RRoD hurt Microsoft even more.

All in all, I think PS3 won, but I understand why one might think 360 won. For me, PS3 won. I say that as someone who has bought neither (financial issues), but is now planning to buy a PS3, because while 360 tended to have the better versions of multiplats, ever so slightly, PS3 had plenty of 3rd party support and the difference is negligible to me. PS3 had the better exclusives, and is only getting more exclusives as time goes on, ones that I'm actually interested in, while 360 is pretty much done aside from some gimped cross-gen titles.

Not that it matters, Wii was the real winner. :P
