Forums - Gaming Discussion - Polygon: Tomb Raider's Xbox exclusivity likely means more sales, higher profits

Polygon have always been pro-Microsoft. Nothing new.

I, for one, wonder how much it will cost Microsoft for having Rise Of The Tomb Raider a timed exclusive and the advertising. $100 million sounds like a safe bet.

I've bought all 3 machines last generation and all 4 previous generation and I will probably buy the Xbox One to have alongside my PS4 and Wii U but I'm not going to buy one until I see how the other hyped Xbox One games fare. That's why this news yesterday didn't bother me as much as other people. It's just when I buy it that is the question and it could well be 2016 when that happens.

A lot of the points in the piece are valid. Ofcourse SE would go for this because it will make them more money in some way.

The point about % of users that have both consoles needs a math lesson.

Say 50% of PS4 users had XB1s too...

Right now, that would mean 5M have PS4 only, 5M have both, and 0 have XB1 only. There would be 10M users total. Going XB1 exclusive would lose 50% (5M) users. Lovely.

Say 50% of XB1 users had PS4s too...

Right now, that would mean 7.5M have PS4 only, 2.5M have both, and 2.5M have XB1 only. There would be 12.5M users total. Going XB1 exclusive would lose 60% (7.5M) users.

Say 25% of XB1 users had PS4s too...

Right now, that would mean 8.75M have PS4 only, 1.25M have both, and 3.75M have XB1 only. There would be 13.75M users total. Going XB1 exclusive would lose 64% (8.75M) users.

So, in the unrealistic scenario of all XB1 users having a PS4, they would give up 50% of users. In a more likely scenario, 64% if not more. Losing over 2/3 your user base is not such a big deal according to Polygon I guess.

Microsoft are so dumb. They are getting the short end of the stick on this deal. The positives are all in SE's favor.

Why does microsoft always spend way too much on crap? Skype, nokia, this...

They arent in it like the other two, they create ms buys.  Its been like that since day one.

MS currently has virtually the same (in fact, right now I think it is exactly the same (17)) first party studios as Sony. I can't be fucked running the numbers, but they probably have just as many second party publishing deals as well.

But, cool story.

And wheres their work.  What did they make in the last decade?

So many assumptions passed off as fact. What a journalist this guy is.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

If the game gets a solid metascore of 85 or higher it will sell more because of the timed exclusivity...

More Xbots will buy it when it is released because of the timed exclusivity... And the PSNation will buy it as soon as it comes out for PS because it will have the reputation of being a great game.

If it scores below 85 on metacritic... Well, it won't sell well on either console.

Here's what's hard for gaming fans to do: We need to stop looking at these deals purely through the lens of someone who wants to play the game. Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics are companies that pay its employees and stay in business by making profits on video games. They don't necessarily think about success as units sold. They have to think of it in terms of profit.

I stopped reading there......

So they are basically telling "gamers" to stop thinking about the games.... or of the games that are basically made for them and we should instead think about how much profit the publishers want to make? Like are the fucking serious?

I really want to know if they actually believe the nonsense they ae saying. MS has a timed exclusive, its a stupid idea considering how well the PS4 is selling now and that the PS4 could very well be over 22M sold to the XB1's 12M by the time this game gets released. They should just let it rest and lets move on... this kinda PR spinning is simply insulting to say the least.

If 50% of all PS4 owners buy XOnes than theres no one on the world that owns only a XOne. Super nice statistic there Polygon...

Everyone owns a PS4. Even MS die hards, they just lie about it to look cool. It's the only answer.

Whatever helps you sleep at night, pal.

Sooo... let me get that math straight.

Polygon is saying that half of all of the combined sales for the Xbox One and PS4 have been to people who own both consoles. That simply isn't possible because that's 2.5 million more sales than the Xbox One has...

Now, lets try to make this viable. Lets say that half of everyone who bought an Xbox One also has a PS4 (which is still being way too generous) That means that you have 2.5 million PS4 owners who could still buy the game.

That still leaves 7.5 million PS4 owners who cant buy the game until it comes out for the PS4. Or...50% of the market. That also assumes that nobody who owns both is going to wait for the PS4 version.

Needless to say the article is bull...

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

wouldnt be worst than if it was also on ps4.
