Except Toad is trying to help Mario so he can buy back his wife's freedom from Wart, and is deeply upset everytime they find that out. Having to suffer a Luigi-esque Death Glare from Mario everytime he manages to get ahead and find out first and warn Mario they're wasting time hurts his feelings - Mario was his childhood hero!

In the end Mario finally manages to reach the prison cells before Toad and breaks out. Mario never realized the same Toad was helping him because they all look the same to him so Toad has no pay-day and his wife died. Plot-twist? You control Mario during the credits so you never forget - Mario is you!
