How about World Trigger ?

It's as long running and shounen as it's going to get when it comes from the same magazine as One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach via weekly shounen jump ...

Tried it, no luck... It definitely is shounen and I can see it, but it feels like Fairy Tail to me... And I am not all that sold on Fairy Tail either...

Depends on how recent you're thinking...but Hunter x Hunter and Assassination Classroom both get high marks from me, even if both feel pretty unique for the genre. If Boku no Hero Academia gets renewed, I'd recommend trying that out as well...I'm loving it so far.

There's also Jojo...pretty much the epitome of shounen right there.

Hunter x Hunter is pretty old (returning though) and Assassination Classroom looks promising, but anime wise it's near dead. Same goes for Hero Academia...

And I lump Jojo with the likes of YuYu Hakusho... A bit too on the "manry" side...

If someone knows a manga that has...

  • Teen main characters
  • Realistic body proportions
  • Takes place on Earth but is not slice of life or crime related
  • No psychological themes
  • Fantasy
  • Male protagonist
  • Shounen
  • Fighting manga
  • Has at least a 150 chapter backlog
  • No older than 2008...
As it stands, the only manga I know that still fill the void are Bleach and Beelzebub...

I will ignore you badmouthing jojo and yuyu hakusho for now, but don't do that again...

As for a shounen that goes with your characteristics, one i can think of is Medaka Box, it's really good. At least the manga is, never saw the anime of it. The first few chapters are kind of SoL-like, but then it goes full on shonen after those. Might want to check that one out.

World Trigger is the closest thing your going to get buddy ...

At least give it some more chance, up to about 20 chapters I say. Teen main characters, realistic body proportions, takes place on earth, no psychological elements, male protagonist, and is a "battle" manga but not through martial arts or magic I guess ...

While does not feature out of the world fantasy, it's going to pass 150 chapters soon ...

There's not really any new long running shounen that I can think of besides World Trigger. I looked up what shounen meant and that's a very loose term to describe as a genre. Terraformars fits the definition in my opinion. haha.

If I were you, I would watch something older. Nothing wrong with diving into the older stuff especially if you've never seen it. Just some examples. Fullmetal Alchemist brotherhood, Inuyasha, Hunter X Hunter.

Shounen can't be described as a genre. It's a targeted demographic ...

Terra Formars is a seinen rather than a shounen since it's published in weekly young jump (older males) instead weekly shounen jump (teenage males) ...

I enjoy not being ridiculously picky over anime. I like what I like and don't like whatever can't maintain my attention. If you get too focused on the particulars of any genre or anime type in general, all you do is limit the quality out there because of a preconceived notion that anime has to present itself in a particular way to be "good".

Also, anybody who can't appreciate Yu Yu Hakusho as a great action anime can eat my shorts. Granted, the beginning is a bit slow and the final arc feels rushed because the manga stumbled to an unsatisfying conclusion, but the in between shines as some of the best action I've seen in anime to date. Once they basically abandon the whole Spirit Detective thing in favor of punch punch spirit gun, the show hits its stride.

This episode of Bungou Stray Dogs was pretty good, but next week looks like it is going to be a seriously cool episode. Apparently the show has a second cour coming for the Fall season too, so I'm pretty content. This has definitely been one of the better ones this season.

Does the age really matter, though? Everyone involved in anime knows that much older people watch any genre of anime. Terraformars has a lot of action and it's target demographic is males. Not much difference between seinen and shounen in my opinion. Alot of people use those words as a term for a genre.

The thing with shonen is that it can be defined as a genre. We can say "targeted at young males", but what does that actually mean? It tends to mean a focus on action, the plot usually driven through repeated conflict resolved through battle of some kind, and it tends to have an absence of romance or only uses it as a comedic plot element (One Piece being a great, long running example of all of the above). Granted, not all shonen will necessarily stick to these basic guidelines, but I could rattle off about a dozen more prominent shonen anime that follow them practically to the letter.

I mean, you can't say that shonen has a target audience and then say that there are no genre specific trends of appealing to a specific target audience. That literally makes no sense.

Yes it does! It's all about the intention behind the author that defines it's target demographic ...

You can't exactly say a series is meant for that particular audience aside from the creators themselves ...

It means that's what the author intended for it's audience to be. Nothing more and nothing less ...

The concept of "shounen" isn't tied to ANY specific genre. You can have a shounen manga focus on whatever genre the author wants like comedy, music, romance, crime drama's, slice of life, psychological, or anything else that also not action. Just because a manga is published in a magazine that targets younger males doesn't mean that it has to conform to the trends like it's other contemporaries do ...

Demographics and genres are practically orthogonal notions ...

Oioioi....topic.

Guilty pleasure of the season?

Mine is Anne-Happy.

Why would that be guilty? It's easily the best anime of the season. Will get a 9/10 for sure.

I don't really have any guilty pleasures this season. It's a pretty good one.
