When I first started getting into anime, I watched pretty much everything. It was new, it was different, and it was amazing. However, as I stumbled upon the best of the best, I came to realize that most anime isn't very good or very original. The bulk of new anime each season is, at best, forgettable. There is such a vast gulf between the top level stuff and filler anime which depends entirely on cliches. As much as anime like Welcome to the NHK, Monster, Serial Experiments Lain, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Nichijou, Kara no Kyoukai, and Nodame Cantabile make me fall in love with the potential of the medium, they also make me less likely to be forgiving of the stuff that's just there to occupy a time-slot.

I like your tastes quite a bit ^.^
Anyways, I agree, although I can get a lot of enjoyment out of the "filler anime" each season, because like vivster said, I do try to judge them for what they are trying to be. I'm more harsh on shows like Ga-rei which seem to be trying to do something that I've seen done infinitely better elsewhere. However, most of the slice of life/cute girls doing cute things shows that I watch have no chance of cracking my top 20 because just due to the fact that they accomplished their goal quite well, doesn't put them on the same tier of other more ambitious shows which may have had a few flaws but ultimately provided a more unique and entertaining experience.
Anyways, for me, like I was saying before, I can appreciate all of those top tier shows more, due to the fact that I am so critical. If I could just turn on the radio and find something I liked in two seconds, I wouldn't be super hyped when I find something I liked online just by mere happenstance (which just happened today and I'm super hyped @.@)...
@vivster: I get that it can be off-putting to see someone disliking things that you love yourself (I'm a Skyward Sword fan, I know how it feels), so I will try to tone it down when I can, but when I feel like my negative opinion can add something to a discussion, I wont shy away from chipping in.
