Forums - Nintendo - Does the new miiverse update pretty much prove Nintendo is putting out a gamepadless Wii U this Christmas?

3DS was a completely different situation. The 3DS was always built with the option of not using the 3D function. Therefore, making a 3DS unit without the 3D function entirely was always possible from day one. The Wii U, however, was never intended to function without the Gamepad, as that would render not just MiiVerse, but many of the other apps and Games themselves to be completely broken. Besides, why would anyone want to navigate Miiverse without the Gamepad? Does anyone really prefer typing lines of text with a directional pad or point and click with Wiimote over being able to type each letter/draw with the stylus? Seems like a step backwards in functionality to me.

People want that option. Is that so strange? I don't want the pad removed. But I would like to navigate things that honestly can work without the pad too. You don't need the pad to just read comments. If I want to just do a quick check on any sub posts. 95% of the time I'm not using the gamepad. And when MK8 asks do you want me to post this sticker on Miiverse. I say no. Because I don't want to just turn on my pad to do that, then shut it off. And did you forget the Wii Remote is jsut as fast and touching the screen?

Proof for this?  Without the Gamepad, people would ask, why should we get a new system.  HD would not be enough.  More power wouldn't be enough, either.  Nintendo is not the system people buy for Multiplats or amazing graphics.  You can't change that with one hardware release.  The sales simply support your own feelings about the machine.

It's the games, stupid. (note: not actually calling anyone stupid, just using it for rhetorical effect... sad that I need to put this disclaimer in, though)

That being said, a Gamepad-less Wii U would have failed to capture any attention, and thus only Nintendo fans would buy it. Maybe more Nintendo fans would buy it earlier, but it would have nothing to encourage people who have Wiis to upgrade except "new games that work just like the older ones, just a bit prettier". And such people wouldn't bother.

With the Gamepad, it becomes "upgrade to get new experiences, to play games you couldn't play on a Wii". It wasn't a perfect execution, but the idea was solid. Gamepadless Wii U would be front-loaded, stronger early sales but not much more. Wii U with Gamepad has the potential to grow into solid sales, even if the launch was weaker.

Oh god I hope so.

1) Buy WiiU
2) Sell Gamepad
3) ???
4) PROFIT!

Gee, what a wonderful idea you got there, buddy! :-/

Miiverse update:

Transfer data from one Wii U to the next.

Second part of update, navigate Wii U eshop with classic controller or Wiimote as well as gamepad.

Do you know how huge a blow to the others it would be if the Wii U dropped in price by 100 dollars on black friday? Or just permanently?

They dropped the 3D part of the 3DS and nobody, including gamers batted an eye. Who's to say they wont with the Wii U as well? Especially after this.

What do you think? Is this proof of what they are planning? Testing the waters

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

Doubt it.

It's more likely that it has been added for support of the gamecube controller as well, plus some people just like using the Wiimote. Plus there is Amiibo which requires the NFC chip in the Gamepad. That would be like them shooting themselves in the foot with a shotgun.

Oh, and for your third point, They dropped the 3D aspect, not the second screen, that would be more like dropping the Gamepad.

I see your argument. But hasn't the oposite happened anyway? People don't usually care about the Pad and don't buy the system usually for it.

In the short term, yes. But like I said, Nintendo isn't in it for a year, it's in it for life. Nintendo has to innovate, or it will die.

Hey Spurge...care to double down on your theory after all this discussion? It will be very valuable come Christmas time if you are right. Just noticing that you haven't posted in this thread since your first two posts.

Well so far Nintendo is screwing up, while they innovate. People keep on hating them for whatever reasons. I guess it doesn't really matter though. As long as they a profit. The GC is considered a flop even though it made them profit. The Wii is hated on. Even though it sold 100m. Regardless to who bought it. So I guess as long as Wii U turns profit, Nintendo wins. And they just stay in the spot of being hated on.
