Forums - Gaming - TitanFall(EA) vs Destiny(Activision)

I agree with the original post that EA should have gone multiplat with Titanfall. It's obvviously in MS and sony's interest to get as many exclusives as you can and last gen that was in the interest of the developers also where games had a campaing and multiplayer but they never crossed streams if you like (Demon souls was probabloy the closest to it) where as this gen the whole single palyer is merged with online and social aspects are thrown in for good measure like watch dogs, destiny etc means that developers need to be getting their install base as large as possible for these franchises to work.

BF, Fifa, Maddens will always be okay though as they have enough loyal fans to keep going but i'm not so sure about Titanfall.

Destiny is in a different league to Titanfall

As in Fifa should somehow sell more in North America and Madden in Europe?

Is that what you got from that? Did i say they should sell more? I said they aren't all they can be. And that is related to the minimal improvements they make every year to those games. Its like they know they will sell regardless so they just don't bother. FIFA15 still looks and plays like a last gen game. Madden is even worse.

Yeah I agree, those games haven't changed fundamentally in years. But I guess EA just sees them as cash cows now, they're gonna sell regardless of how much they innovate.

But I think if Titanfall gets a sequel and is released on PS4 as well, they might have a full-blown new franchise on their hands. Lord knows the first one was hyped to the heavens, if the sequel gets a similar marketing blitz I don't see why sales wouldn't grow exponentially.

Why is this even a thread? Destiny will murder Titanfall and then dance on its grave!

Well, Titanfall is only on Xbox and PC and it is an online only shooter, It's not a surprise that it will sell less but it should also cost much less to develop as Destiny. I also never saw Titanfall advertisement on German TV so that this is also a reason for no gigantic sales.

What EA really fucked up is what they did with games like Medal of Honour but I think they do pretty well with mobile games nowadays don't they? Not to forget that Fifa is much bigger as it once was. It's probably a 20m+ seller every single year.

I'm trying to understand the point of the OP. EA is a terrible publisher? Destiny will sell more than Titanfall? Which is sort of a pointless contest seeing as one launched very early in the generation and was limited to MS platforms only.

Destiny will absolutely crush Titanfall when they are compared. IMO EA should have funded TitanFall them selfs and not run around looking for a money hat. they should have taken a risk and now it bit them in the ass big time.

Exactly what I think too. They should have held the game back till the fall too. And made it as good as they possibly could to go head to had with destiny. And I have heard quite a few stories about how this went down. Ranging from EA not being willing to fund the game unless they owned the IP to EA doing that exclusivity deal cause at the time they want to fully get behind MS with their DRM plans,

I urge anyone that wants to play armchair quarterback on the whole Titanfall/EA/MS thing to read The Final Hours of Titanfall.

The game was already delayed a couple times and was truly close to be completely canceled. MS essentially saved the game and Sony told Respawn to take a hike when they inquired about "next gen" systems during development.

Don't forget about Dragon Age, Mirror's Edge and that other new Bioware thingy.
Also I heard that SW:TOR is still doing quite well.

EA was beasting with new IPs last gen. I think they can do the same this gen.

Dragon Age will probably do well for a RPG, but it won't be huge.  Maybe 5 million across all platforms.  DA Origins did about 2.5 million on xbox360 and 1.5 million on ps3.  DA2 bombed.

However, I'm not sure about Mirror's Edge.  I know there are some Mirror's Edge fanatics out there, but this game wasn't good.  It had some good ideas and game mechanics (stuff like running on walls and jump/grabbing up ledges seemed new at that time in 1st person view but these game mechanics are in many fps games now), but overall, the game was mediocre.  It sold about 1.1 million on both xbox360 and ps3.  Yes, the fanatics will buy the game, but I doubt this game will grow and attract new gamers unless this game is extraordinary on another level.

As for Titanfall vs Destiny:

Destiny PS4 will outsell Titanfall Xbox1.  Currently, Titanfall xbox1 is just a tad below 2 million, so it'll probably end up around 3.5 million lifetime  (1.5 million lifetime on xbox360).

However, I think Destiny PS4 will open at least at 2 million sold in the 1st week.  Currently, it's about 500k pre-orders for North America alone.  It should get to around 700-800k for pre-orders and open about 1.2-1.3 million 1st week sale in North America.  Then double that for rest of the world, so that should be 2.4 million for the 1st week for the PS4 version alone.  Unless this game is an absolute disappointment, this game should have somewhat good legs and get to about at least 7 million lifetime on PS4.  I expect the xbox1 version to sell about 1.5 million globally in the 1st week.  Probably about a million for ps3 and xbox360 each in the 1st week.

As stated before, 3rd party exclusive are a bad idea, and Titanfall is a great example.  Exclusivity probably halved the total expected sales for Titanfall.  It could have sold an additional 3-4 million for PS4/PS3 which is about another (4million * $60) $240 million of revenue.  MS got a good deal for getting Titanfall exclusive to Xbox1, but Respawn probably didn't get $240 million to cover for the loss of sales.

If you are going to do an exclusivity deal, it should be with PS4 for perks like DLC but the games needs to be released across all platforms.  Games like Watch Dog and Destiny are great examples.

I was literally just about to post that we should all chip in a dime or so and buy the forum a copy of that piece so that it would save a lot of these threads from existing. People would then understand the sheer hell that was the development of this game, all the risks involved, and they'd understand exactly why EA was in the position they were in and why MS swooped in and saved it.

Furthermore Titanfall has sold great and they have an agreement to make multiple future games. It's not as if Titanfall is dead or something, lol.

Titanfall wouldn't have been any better if it were on the PS3. It would have sold more, probably 6Million total by now and we'd have a higher res console version but that's about it.
