Forums - Gaming - Will the XB1 be able to outsell the Wii U from this point on?

The real question is "Can the XB1 hold on to second place going forward?"

It has never left third, lol.

EVERY console this gen has followed a trend. Strong initial sales, an abrupt fall in sales, and a slow recovery. The PS4 demonstrates this the least, and Nintendo's hardware has shown it the most, but every console shows this pattern.

Consequently, I have to conclude that the X1 and the Wii U are going to continue following this trend, except that because the Wii U launched first, it is on the recovery part of the curve, while the X1 has just now hit the falling sales part. The X1's unbundling and price drop will keep it from having a terrible Christmas, but Nintendo and Sony will have solid sales. Come next year most developers will see good reasons to go exclusive PS4 to fully use the power or exclusive Wii U to get the gamepad (or shortcut the visual production values).  Meanwhile the North American Shooter market will only attract the biggest games to go multiplatform with the X1. That will spell a slow and painful death for the X1 coming to a head some time in 2016 or 2017.

Plenty of time for Microsoft to do something, but still a bad direction.

The XB1 has been doing progressively worse since 2014 started. The unbundling made sales go up for a little bit, but the release was timed with a 5 week NPD to make the numbers look as impressive as possible. The boost is already dying and as I've already pointed out in another post, third party titles just aren't pushing XB1 consoles like MS had planned. They thought the 360's domination in third parties would carry over no matter what they did and they failed to do a single thing that made the 360 successful with the XB1 release.

Unless they create a lot of new first party titles fast, like sony did for PS3, they're screwed royally.

For the first 6 months of the xbox one's life I was almost positive that it was going to surpass that wiiU by the end of 2014 or the beginning of 2015. But the wiiU has been outselling the xbox one for I think all of July and some of june. This is after their big price drop as well. Now I'm betting by next month the xbox one moves past the wiiU on weekly sales, and I'm still pretty confident that the xbox one is going to beat the wiiu. But it's looking like it's going to take way longer than I once though.

Sure, Halo is the only exclusive for Xbone that is worth it... *sigh*

For a mainstream average joe? Absolutely, it's the only game with any system selling capacity outside maybe Gears, but that's 2016 so it's laregly irrelevant right now.

So Sony only has Gran Turismo?

I can't really name many major, or even mild, first party franchises for MS outside of Halo, Gears, and possibly Forza.

Sony has Uncharted, their share of the Souls series, God of War, Gran Turismo, etc.

True, but that wasn't proof the system was struggling. The turning point in my mind was when the Wii U overtook the X1's sales. Usually console sales do fall off after launch as they reach steady rates (the PS4, for instance, has fallen behind the 3DS, again. I hardly call that bad.) Falling behind the Wii U after unbundling Kinect is proof that we were looking at the console really was falling behind.

For the Wii U, that tipping point was sales falling behind the Wii. The 3DS had the same tipping point with the DS, and the Vita with the PSP.

Yeah i know! I think it will outsell it end of this year tbh... MK8 gave me a lot of hope!

SSB will push it ahead the vita!

So did it happen ?

I wonder if people here will enjoy the crow that I've prepared ...

I sure hope not.

The Wii U still has the potential to reach a broader audience. Its lineup this year doesn't have heavy hitters like Smash and Mario Kart 8, but games like Splatoon, Giant Robo, and Mario Maker are games that *could* garner attention for being something unique. It's possible one of them could catch on (assuming they've progressed from their E3 forms).

That being said, it's more likely that the XBone will stay ahead.
