Forums - Nintendo - Happy Birthday NES 31st

As many of us know today is the 31st Birthday of the NES, it can be said that this was the first attempt of Nintendo to enter to the Console Market, a market that was suffering and in decline. Thanks to Nintendo the console market recovered and built the pillars of what it is today.

How do you thing that the Console Market would be if Nintendo didn't release the NES? Share your favorite NES game :)

We are Family (Computer)

31 years ago today, Nintendo Co., Ltd. released the Famicom console in Japan, an event which would herald the beginning of the firm's wildly successful relationship with home video games.

Hitting store shelves at 14,800 Yen (around $145 / £84 / 107 Euros), the system wasn't an instant hit with the Japanese public. Sales were initially sluggish and an issue with production forced Nintendo to recall the first batch of consoles in order to replace the motherboard. By the end of 1984 things were very different indeed — the Famicom was the best selling games console in its homeland. A western release would follow in 1985, where the console was renamed the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES for short.

Is the Famicom older than you, or are you withered enough to recall when it appeared on the scene and changed the industry forever? Share those memories with a comment below.

Happy bday Famicom. The NES is my age so I'm not old enough to remember the beginings, but I sure remember growing up to it.

Yes me too, I am too young but I grown-up with the NES ans SNES, if it wasn't for this maybe I wouldn't play video games as I do today.

all hail the nes

Great console but I must say the Japanese version was also pretty ugly. Plus that the controllers where actually permanently attached to the console is pretty dumb.

Happy Birthday, NES/Famicom! I didn't grow up with the NES, nor is it my favorite Nintendo console, but I can appreciate it for how much it did for gaming....... in America at least!
