Eh, I think ps4 will stay ahead, it has its own heavy hitters hitting soon, and as the new kid on the block, it will enjoy a very healthy holiday season as well.

This year 3DS will sell more, lifetime no...

Neither of those are going to happen

because by end of year 3ds will sell more, duh. :P

Why are we comparing handheld sales to console sales?

I would think that both platforms cater to very very different types of gamers and/or usage scenarios.

One would argue that Vita fans use their PS4s remotely, then again I find the comparison interesting. Could easily say Japan is taking the #1 console country this year instead of MS taking it (In terms of where the companies are based)

Both predictions are wrong! Wow

really?

the ps4 and 3ds have been at the top of the charts all year. ps4 has been beating it, but ps4 has been on an decline, and 3ds has been on an incline this last month, so it makes for an interesting race. it doesnt matter who the machines cater to. hell, i would say they by and large cater to the same crowd-gamers. anyway, thats why we care to compare the two and make predictions about where they are going to end up. it really could go either way, but im gonna put my money on 3ds because of christmas alone. it will sell 1,000,000 in a single week and will probably benefit the most from the holiday.

Whenever you make sales predictions, you need to consider that both consoles are selling. In fact, in that very table you posted, the 3DS sales dropped further than that of the PS4 sales.
It could go either way to be honest. But Intrinsic brings up an important point.
3DS has the disadvantage of being older...

on a different note, it worries me that pretty much every console (PS4 is probably the only exception) seems to be on track to doing worse than their predeccessor.

Agreed.

At the very least, if there is a subsequent generation, the focus will switch back to dedicated niche fanbases rather than appealing to everyone like they begun to do mid 7th gen, we might even get lucky and it happens this gen.

Last gen, the importance of the dedicated gamer market feel out of favor for the sexier, larger, and more attractive mainstream crowd, and we saw things like AA's evaporate and Super Franchises emerge, releasing yearly, recylcing content, and selling way more then they should, budgets becoming insanely high, etc. But now the resurgence of indies and decline of casual intrest in consoles might lead to a refocusing and a return of AA despite a shrinking of the market, which I personally believe isn't all that bad.
