Forums - Sony - Sony admits PS4 is a tough sell in Japan

As far as traditional gaming, Japan is Nintendo country now. Why? Because they still release Japanese AAA games developed by Japanese devs. Sony, on the whole, threw their own people under the buss and went for the US this gen. You can't have it both ways and they're finding that out.

No worries, Sony! I'm sure the PS4 will sell 40 million in Japan once FFXV comes out in 2018!

And now we wait for TGS.

This is impossible though! People told me the Xbox failed in Japan cause Microsoft is American, not because the Xbox lacked Japanese games! I always knew the reason the 360 failed in Japan was because it lacked Japanese games, and by the time it got some (in 2007/08) it was too late. The PS4 will also struggle until it gets Japanese games.

SEGA also had similiar issues in Japan until the Saturn.

Wii U sales in Japan are bad. So if PS4 is selling worse than Wii U, the. That is worse than bad.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

I'm sure it will pick up massively once it gets some Japan centric games. The western release had loads of Western games so the success is no surprise.

As far as I know, there is nothing major until way into 2015

To add to that, in a market(Japan) that favors quality gameplay over graphic fidelity(just look at the handheld market), why do they really need a PS4 that essentially only gives them upgraded graphics?

Sony can satisfy Japan, they are just blinded by the all the money they are getting from the west. The Japanese don't want what captures the west.

One word.
Destiny.

Going to keep being tough in Japan if they don't do something soon as well. No games that would appeal to Japan. They tend to like more of their own style of games than Watch Dogs or a typical shooter. This is why Nintendo is doing fantastic with the 3DS. Yokai Watch 2 happened Friday and sold over 812,000 copies and not mentioned 3DS sales yet and they got even more games where thats come from. Nintendo Direct recently for Japan showed loads of 3rd-Party titles and then they got Pokemon, Smash and they might even like Amiibo. Nintendo has had Japan on their side since the start because they made the attempted and pleased Japan before everyone did.

PS4 has no games. It's a tough sell everywhere.

Dude, the console is selling pretty well. if the PS4 is a tough sell what would you call the X1?

A very tough sale?  The Wii U has a much better line up than both consoles combined and it's selling worse.  Just because it's selling doesn't mean its line up is good which was my point entirely.

It was the same with the ps3 in the beginning, really bad charts week after week, until japanese games finally come.

And for jap games, it will only be after Persona 5, dev are still happy with the ps3/vita at the moment.
