Forums - Sony Discussion - Shuhei Yoshida: Only Four Out of Ten PlayStation Games Make Money, but Sony Will Always Support Talent

They always support talent? Liar! Sony didn't sponsor Bayonetta, and also not a new game from Platinum, like MS and Nintendo both did.

Don't know if I would call Platinum talent...

And you shouldn't.

By the way guys, he's not saying only 4 IP's out of 10 make money, he's saying 4 out of every 10 game they make earn enough to be considered profitable. The game can be a part of an IP that's profitable as a whole like God of War, minus Ascension. Or a game that profits in an otherwise small IP like some of the SingStar(s).

This business is going down the toilet honestly.

When Sony, who is supposed to be the lead console maker is saying they basically lose money on 60% of the titles they make ... I'm sorry, but that just strikes me as an industry that's gone insane.

He also says 2 or more titles usually more than make up the difference. Next, you have to remember that 1st party software isn't their only source of income. 3rd party royaltee fees, PS+, accessory/peripheral sales and although not normally at the begining of the gen, hardware sales all bring in money.

Consoles need a diverse portfolio of games to last. Just turns out that a lot of these games aren't money makers. They're taking a hit to support a bigger and profitable picture.

4 ≈ One

I feel like it's a pretty gamble-heavy business model, but I'm happy that they are able to support a lot of talent because of it :)

4 out of 10 sounds so wrong to me, makes me wanna just say 2 out of 5

There's always someone out there who wants to reduce things to the lowest common denominator...

This is why I love Sony as a platform holder. They always put the money back into the games, and hardware. No other platform holder constantly pushes themselves to develop new experiences more than Sony. It is games like Tourist Trophy, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, Little Big Planet, Tearaway, Journey, and the list goes on and on, that really make me love gaming.

This generation is going to be amazing. SCEWWS is a well oiled machine now, and they have shifted there focus almost completely to PS4. If PS4 continues to have the amazing sales it has garnered thus far, Sony will have loads of royalties cash coming in, and that will only drive them to push more diverse games. I think we are in for the best generation ever, and the future of the industry has never looked more exciting.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

Pretty bad for Sony, actually. Software sales aren't that high on PS4. If Sony can't change that, they may not be able to support the budget of their AAA games.

Which is why it's no coincidence they said "expect fewer" in regards to them.

I guess they see indirect applea in it then, because diversity can really be good for a platform, and every exclusive gives a slight advantage over the competition.

Yeah, thats one of the reasons why i like them, they always support games that are actually great but they dont promote said games, theres almost no marketing for those games and therefore they dont sell really well... games like Disgaea, Yakuza, The Guided Fate Paradox etc.

its hard to say that this games would sell well with marketing (because of how niche they are), but they are good games that i enjoy and im glad they support them.

If you expect to not have profit and that it's niche you can't put much money on advertising.

i said that in my comment, and i appreciate that despite knowing that this games (more than likely with or whitout marketing) wont sell well, Sony still supports them.

It was my mistake, sorry;

OK, no problem.

love comments like these , they are super funny cause i remenber ps3 had them too in the first year, after a while the people who made vanished. People forgets about 2013,2012 ,2011 etc :)

i like the fact sony does not stick with 3 franchises in a gen

Love comments like these. They assume that I'm attacking when my post has absolutely nothing to do with their precious company.

because people here dont know you right?

We all know each other and we know who is attacking/defending here all the time, yes.

Yes, we know very well who those neutral people are.
