The idea of streaming games sounds great, period.

What we know about Sony's pricing thus far is killing our boner.

Yes, but these would be FTP ...

Yeah, but will they be free to stream?

It appears to me bandwidth used by PS Now is big concern of Sony.

That's a really good point. I'm doing more research about PS Now and I'm starting to think that its actually a really good idea. provided Sony can implement and price it correctly.

Bandwidth is probably the biggest problem for the FTP model but I'm sure Sony will push the 'requirement' message hard for PSNow. They've already said it requires at least 5mb to run smoothly so perhaps the bandwidth requirement for FTP games would be higher and displayed on the FTP section of PSNow?

I really don't get your point. If FTP devs would put their games on PSNow for free, all their proceeds would go directly to Sony for server fees. Why would any company do this?

People with just a Blu-ray player or a TV will not play these games. Why? Because if they had any interest in gaming they'd already have some kind of device that plays games. People with gaming devices will be able to play games locally on their devices with the added bonus of no input lag.

i think it would be cheaper for them to develop for new platforms than to pay a monthly fee to Sony so they can bring a subpar experience to more people.

What he's saying is that Sony would lose money by offering free to play games for free but they would also attract people who would eventually start renting games. When I first installed steam it was to play some free to play games that a friend recommended. Ever since I've bought several games. You need to attract customers somehow.

Is that gonna happen? Perhaps not, but maybe it wouldn't be a terrible idea. It's similar to certain shops offering ps4's for less than $400. Sure they're taking a hit, but they are also promoting their stores.

Makes sense?

Makes a bit sense. Still, the entry level for playing is not zero. People without a gaming device would still need to buy a controller. That step is already too big for most people. I really doubt that PSNow will further Sony's reach beyond Playstation.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Playing a multiplayer game that is a twitch shooter where milliseconds determine whether you're dead or alive isn't going to be viable on a stream service. The amount of input lag + lag between players would be horrible.

Battlefield, Halo, COD , Titanfall are all on dedicated servers because of how bad PVP is yet you think streaming will be fine?

Then why are Sony putting PSNow on Bravia TVs?

Yep, it does seem to me that most people still think PSNow is just a workaround for backward compatibility. PSNow is designed to spread the PS brand beyond the normal restraints of 'gaming' hardware.

FTP games exist ... no? Then clearly the model works from a financial standpoint and at the end of the day, that's all that matters to people who could potentially support the service. As another poster pointed out, perhaps there IS a problem because of all these FTP games being online only, and perhaps the extra lag these could potentially introduce would make it almost impossible to make them work on PSNow properly, but if they can get them working well the model would work in exactly the same way it works now.

We are going to be getting RPG so clearly there is a way for PSNow to store your progress and everything else required to make your own playthrough unique from others, so it follows they will also be able to store/monitor what content you have bought for a FTP game.

And what better way to get people interested in PSNow than to offer them a way of testing it without paying any money up front?

Because they're delusional. They're about as much naive about the furthering of their base as they are thinking that PSNow will properly work through the Internet.

FTP works because they are not losing money on it because publishing costs are minimal. Putting it on PSNow will make either Sony or the developer lose money because now there's another not unsignificant money drain tacked on to the game. As Pachter already said it a hundred times, Sony will have a very hard time making money with PSNow. Seeing how the community reacted to even almost reasonable prices, there is just no chance for them to find a good middle ground. Sony needs to not only maintain the servers but also pay the game companies to put their games on the service. Sadly no one wants to pay a reasonable price for it as they are spoiled by other streaming services.

And about furthering their base. About what people are we talking about?  People without gaming devices won't be enticed by FTP. Why? because it is not free for them. Even with FTP games there is an entry fee for buying a controller that works with their TV. Even if that's just $10 that's a big difference to being free. People would never play FTP if they had to pay $10 dollar up front.

What about people with mobile only? Even if we ignore that a lot of PSNow games will never work with tablet controls it still wouldn't make sense(if you insist on mobile gamers getting a controller, see previous point). Why subscribe to a streaming service if you already have thousands of options through an app store? Also again with the added benefit of no input lag and gameplay without internet.

People with only PC have even more options. Most if not all FTP games are already on PC, even without the need of getting a controller.

Which leaves only gamers who alredy own a Playstation device. There is where it shines. The only option where FTP really is FTP because they already got the equipment. But why stream FTP games if you can play them locally on your device?

That leaves me with only 2 uses for PSNow. Trying out games for less than the buying price and benefitting from the instant access everywhere without downloading times and having PS3 games on PS4 and Vita.

PSNow might work with Playstation exclusive games on other devices for people who are ready to spend some money on it anyway. But FTP games are utterly useless to popularize PSNow. Sony will lose money by appealing to a base that doesn't exist.

So your answer to me proving your premise wrong is to accuse Sony of being delusional. I'm not reading the rest because clearly there wouldn't be any point in debating what must follow that comment.

Will you read it if I edit it out? You will see there are a lot of good points in there that you have not thought of yet and might change your mind. Ignoring my arguments because of the silly first statement seems a little weird in a debate. I mean I ignored your less than stellar statements and still managed to not only read everything but to produce a counter argument to everything.

I hope you have it in your heart.

I honestly think that Sony really is in way over their head plunging into this new territory. It's completely new ground for them and the concept, even though it has been out there for years is still unproven. Sony is trying it on such a large scale that no one can predict how it will tun out. Sony is no stranger to failed product launches. Your statement implies that Sony is incapable of making bad decisions and losing money on it.

No, you misunderstood.

I'm not talking about the users bandwidth required to use the service. I'm talking about bandwidth used on Sony's side to offer streaming video to users.

I'm reluctant to believe Sony is going to allow people to stream games for free.

First of all, let's start PSNow like it was intended. Out of the beta, for millions of users, all around the world. Users with different internet access, different isp's, different home hardware and let's test Sony's server infrastructure, performance with more load and the peering differences in different regions.
The whole service sounds interesting but there are way too many variables to make PSNow a crucial part in gaming. And that's of course if Sony does the pricing right...
