Still not official... PS3 is probably ahead in shipments, but not sales.

The PS3 has always outsold the X1 by a fairly large margin, its not rocket sience, 1 year less in the market and the same total sales, PS3 has always sold faster. I dont know why ppl look at total sales of consoles that didnt launch at the same year. Its lthe same deal with the WiiU and the ONe, saying the WiiU is ahead is not right the XOne sells a lot faster than the WiiU ever did, launches need ot be aligned.

People only believe official statements when it suits them,  if Sony came forward and said 'ps3 has now outsold 360' most xbox fans response would be to question sold vs shipped or call bullshit. 

 

not even sure sony would even want to announce it,  'hey everyone,  our last console has outsold its comoetitor it only took 7 years'  why do that when they can instead bask in the warm glow of ps4 victory

my post had nothing to do with "How would fans react" or how fans downplay. Its just stating that VGChartz numbers are the furthest thing from "official". I guess you could just flip it and just say that people only believe VGChartz numbers when it suits them/their agenda.

"Officially" lol, no. These numbers are wrong. Both the PS3/360 should be over 84 million. It's seemed like the PS3 was at 81 million for over a year.

I am not too sure PS3 will catch up with 360, but it is very likely. Remember, between November of 2012 and October of 2013, both PS3 and 360 shipped 10million units (if I remember correctly) meaning the sell through between them probably was the same, also meaning PS3 dropped of in sales much faster than 360.

At the current rate, I believe PS3 has a decent chance of doing it, but not by much. Both PS1 and PS2 sold around 40% of their LTD sales when the sucessor was out, so it gives a decent number. 360 is more difficult because it isn't selling that much units weekly, but it will do 90M or 95M and end pretty close.

Sounds good PS3 clearly didnt live up to the potential of the PS2 and PS1 but if it beats out WII it could be the ultimate redemption for Playstation, especially with the heat they have going on with the PS4, which is destined for greatness. 

If the PS3 beats out the Wii, then it would have lived up to the potential of the PS1, in terms of sales.  The PS1 sold 102M, and for the PS3 to beat the Wii it will have to ship ~102M.

Definitely have to wait until Sony gives some kind of numbers before we know for sure.

Intersting Vgchartz has ps1 at 104.25 million yeah i know numbers are dodgy on here but  i assumed it was 109 million in sales and yeah your right Sony needs to give some substancial numbers for us to make a fair assessment on this matter.
