Forums - Gaming - Nintendo's Plan to Bring in Younger Fans

Should Nintendo try to bring in young fans?

Yes! It's great in the long-term! 39 73.58%

No! The market isn't in consoles anymore! 14 26.42%

Total:53

We'll see. Sometimes, not only do adults dislike things that are marketed to kids--kids don't like them, either. After all of the years of buying my daughter Finding Nemo and Flushed Away on PS2 and games like Bee Movie and Kung Fu Panda on Xbox 360 (in addition to Nintendo's offerings on our Nintendo consoles), it didn't take long for her to see the games I was playing and decide she liked those more. She likes some of those "fun for all ages" games but when we beat Resident Evil 5 together when she was probably 7 or 8 years old, there was no turning back. I don't know if Nintendo's plan is a viable one.

They make games like Zelda, Metroid and Xenoblade which appeal more to adults, as well as funding games such as Bayonetta 2 and Devil's Third. Additionally, many of their other games such as Mario Kart, Smash Bros and Mario have a universal appeal...

The problem isn't that they aren't appealing to adults or whatever, its that they don't have the resources to strongly cater to everybody without the help of third parties. They are spreading their resources well, they just don't have enough resources.

Anyways, this seems like a thing that wont really hurt anyone, but might help a few...no reason to complain here, and not really much to talk about either

I could care less what they make for kids, as long as we keep getting things like Bayonetta, The Devil's Third, Fatal Frame, ect.

They give what their audience want not like Sony

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

Attracting kids is actually the least of their problems.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Because they aren't going after younger gamers already?

The next mario game will have an age limit of 7. If you are older you are not allowed to play it :p

The problem is that kids not always want kiddie things. Kids want to look like teens, teens want to look like adults. That means that kids will go after what their older brother or older friends like. If you have 12, you don't want to play Mario if your 15 years older brother say that CoD is awesome. I think we have the following problems:

- Adults play games and adults will make the decision about which console to buy. They will prefer a consoles with adult games that has games for kids too. So they can play GTA and BF and their kids can play Lego games (ok, they will play Lego games too because they are good). That explains why 3DS sells and Wii U doesn't. The decision about a home console is for the entire family, so the adult will choose. The handheld is a personal choice, so the kid can choose what they want, it just can't be expensive.

- Kids want to look older. They will try to do what older kids do and will try to get distance from what younger kids do. If you are 12, you see a 8 year old playing Pokemon and a 15 year old playing BF. You will play BF because you want to be like the older kid, not like the younger.

I think that Nintendo's last perfect console about that was N64. It had the cool factor and they were pushing mature and kid-friendly games at the same time. You would see ads showing a guy totally frozen because 1080º Snowboarding was "the real deal", ads showing the brutal side from Killer Instinct, ads showing Pokemon Stadium and so on. That's how you do it.

If Nintendo can do it right, it might be awesome. The question is: Can they do it right?

We have people that are out of touch with reality thinking that commercials with cool parents playing Wii U Karaoke with the kids was going to sell consoles. Keep those people faaaaar way this time. I look at Nintendo's youtube stuff and I say, "Why aren't they putting this on TV!?"

I think about when game devs say "We're going to market towards girls now." and then they introduce a Barbie dress up game, a pink console, and some birth control pills. Not only does that shit not work, if I were a girl, I'd be insulted! Market towards the younger people in an intelligent and creative way and the future will potentially be bright.
