The problem is that kids not always want kiddie things. Kids want to look like teens, teens want to look like adults. That means that kids will go after what their older brother or older friends like. If you have 12, you don't want to play Mario if your 15 years older brother say that CoD is awesome. I think we have the following problems:
- Adults play games and adults will make the decision about which console to buy. They will prefer a consoles with adult games that has games for kids too. So they can play GTA and BF and their kids can play Lego games (ok, they will play Lego games too because they are good). That explains why 3DS sells and Wii U doesn't. The decision about a home console is for the entire family, so the adult will choose. The handheld is a personal choice, so the kid can choose what they want, it just can't be expensive.
- Kids want to look older. They will try to do what older kids do and will try to get distance from what younger kids do. If you are 12, you see a 8 year old playing Pokemon and a 15 year old playing BF. You will play BF because you want to be like the older kid, not like the younger.
I think that Nintendo's last perfect console about that was N64. It had the cool factor and they were pushing mature and kid-friendly games at the same time. You would see ads showing a guy totally frozen because 1080º Snowboarding was "the real deal", ads showing the brutal side from Killer Instinct, ads showing Pokemon Stadium and so on. That's how you do it.
