Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Smart or Stupid? Splatoon isn't a Mario game.

Smart, Nintendo needs new characters and IP's.

there is no doubt in my mind that if this game was skinned with mario it would sell more than as is.

i'm glad nintendo is trying to make a new IP out of this but this whole squid theme is just not doing it for me. i wish they put more effort into the aesthetics because these characters just feel so lifeless and boring. mario would be better than squids but new IP with effort would be better than mario.

Squids and ink make perfect sense plus there will be customization. Not sure why everyone is disliking the character design, I love it. I get a Jet Set Radio vibe from this game.

well it's opinion so i don't know how to support my statement any further than to say i don't like it.   there may be customization but from what was show i thought the customizations looked very "samey".   i mean, your color is picked for you to communicate your team affiliation.  a lot of the features don't seem to change: face, gun, ears, size (height and weight), those annoying racoon eyes.

dunno, maybe there will be better customization in game than what they've shown.  as is i don't like it.  i just look at this and feel (like a racist) like they all look the same.

i tend to enjoy class based shooter the best though so that may be part of it.

Amiibo integration as character skins would definitely be a boon to this game; scan your figure, play as that character and maybe get a special power based on them. Samus's arm cannon, paint bomb arrows for Link etc.

I think the lack of Mario has gotten this game more attention. I think it may have been just pushed away if it was Mario. So I think in this cause, it was smart to leave Mario out. I guess it may have been a good idea to include all of Nintendo characters in this game. I don't really know how well that would have been taken. But if they did there regular characters, they probably would have been able to do the squid thing.

No what got this game it's attention was an online shooter from Nintendo and the amount of time it was shown at the Nintendo Treehouse event.

Lack of Mario? There was that Mario VS Donkey Kong eShop game!

I was impressed they didn't resort to Mario again. I love Mario, but do wish Nintendo would try more new IPs as like risk taking and new looks and ideas.

Am I the only person who has noticed the distinct similarity in design between the Splatoon squids and the Bloopers from Mario games? If that was intentional, then it was smart IMO.

Its the only link with Mario I can see - otherwise, the pace, the characters, the look and feel are completely different, and I love the music.

Weather your a fan of the newest IP from Nintendo or not, I want your opinion on Splatoon.

Was it smart of Nintendo to create this new IP or should they have slapped a fresh batch of Mario ink on it? After all the Mario moniker sells games, regardless of how good it is or its genre. Surely putting Mario characters in would have made this sell more. Give them all a F.L.U.D.D that sprays paint or ink instead and have them turn into bloopers, it wouldn't have taken very much at all.

At least people can't complain about Nintendo's lack of new IPs or another Mario game but is that really important?

Anyway Yay or nay for new Ip?

I am going to say from the beginning I love the idea of Splatoon as it is and will be purchasing it.

I also wish it was Super Mario Paintball.

I think Mario's inclusion would make it sell less.  That doesn't mean I personally wouldn't love Mario's inclusion.  My most recent thread seems to indicate that even if Nintendo waited a year or two before releasing Super Mario Paintball that people just get irrationally upset at Mario in videogames that aren't Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart and Smash Bros.

So I guess that means smart?

I'm hyped for it !

I'm actually more interested because Mario has nothing to do with this.
