Ok then, we're going to have to agree to disagree. You can go on living life assuming no one in hte world takes racial slurs offensively, while I'll remain believing some do and some don't.
You are 'telling' people why they are offending by the slur, that's what I find ignorant. And in your last post you're saying that everyone targeted by it is socially unacceptable? I'm actually struggling to see where you are getting all this from.
I mean seriously, is this word so important to your everyday life Grey? Is the fact that it offends people seriously limiting your vocabulary? |
I don't really care myself, but I don't want to have to have an ever growing list of words that I can't use for completely nonsensical and hypocritical reasons. I don't assume no one takes offense at the word nigger, but that they have no PERSONAL reason to do so. My points supporting this were all listed out in my first post. The reason for NOT saying it (being offended) is undermined by the fact that black people can say it, but not white people, which is of itself a racist viewpoint, even though saying the word is what is supposed to be racist.
No word should be made not allowed because some group has chosen to become offended by it. Simply put, there are two acceptable responses to any word: The word does not apply to you, thus you may dismiss it and not be offended by the word, or the word DOES apply to you, in which case it's the truth so shut the fuck up whether it offends you or not and if you don't like it, make the changes to YOURSELF so that word no longer applies.
Think about the few people that still do use the term nigger to be an insult. Why does that still continue? Because black people are still "offended" by it, and often react in ways that reinforce teh stereotype suggested by "nigger"
How long would that word continue to be used as an insult if every single black person believed and informed others that "nigger" was actually an ancient african term referring to royalty, and thanked the person for the complement? "thank you, I can only hope to one day reach the respect and prosperity of the royal niggers of my homeland"
You will NEVER stop the usage of a term that offends someone. You can only work to make it not offensive and ignore the offensive use of it completely until no one can remember that it ever had that meaning.
