Nintendo said they'll be doing announcements throughout the day, so they got to have SOME surprises.
Probably because it's extremely early in development.
Because we'll hear more from it during Treehouse. I'm pretty certain.

They probably just wanted to tease cause if you paid attention to the Digital Event near the end, you could see that it was starfox on the monitor but I doubt its ready to be shown just yet

That didn't stop Sony from showing a map for Uncharted 4 lol
Nintendo's plans were to scatter releases over a few days I believe. More a case of accidentally leaked than stealth announced though, it was on the left side of the site before the digital event started.
