Not saying I love them, but who's better in FFXIII? Sazh is OK. Other than that...

The bad FFX characters are as bad as the bad FFXIII characters if you ask me!

There aren't as many of them. Or, at least, there are some good/decent ones...

I love 10 but hate 13. The hallway issue is not a gripe for me with either game. 4 also guides you on a path and that is my favorite in the series. My beefs with 12 are the other issues, many of which were mentioned in the OP. Story, setting, characters, items, combat, music, etc. It lacked all of the magic of older games.

I enjoyed both Final Fantasy X and XIII. Ever since I started following the series in the early nineties, I've always tried to approach each new entry with an open mind, and I think I've been able to enjoy just about every Final Fantasy game that I've played because I didn't hold strong expectations (since I know that the developers have always attempted something new with each entry).

This. Both games are linear, but there are waaaaay different degrees of linearity at play.
FFXIII= Walk down a corridor, fight battles, repeat.
FFX= Walk down a corridor, fight battles, enter town, talk to NPCs, recruit people for blitzball, play blitzball, go into dungeon, complete puzzles, fight boss, repeat.
That's not to mention things like chocobo racing sequences, lightning plains, underwater sequences, and little things like that which add flavor and variety to the game.
Not all fans, some of them may have genuine reasons for not liking XIII but liking X. But for the most part, yes, a lot of them are hypocrites. The vast majority of complaints directed at XIII can be applied to X, and the structures of both games are ridiculously similar.

X is a bit worse when it comes linearity. You have some towns to visit and some annoying ass dungeon challenges..stuff (forgot what they were called) but overall the game is pretty much one straight line with a few twists and turns and dungeons.. At least there was Gran Pulse in XIII.
But over all, X is still the better game because it had better story, soundtrack, characters, customization, and rage inducing bosses
took me hours to finish last boss.. ;_;
