FFX had:

-Towns (HUGE difference)

-Backtracking

-Branching paths

-Underwater levels

-Puzzles

-Side-missions (beyond hunts)

-Collectibles

-Mini games

-Secret areas

-A more customizable level-up system

-Interesting NPCs to talk to

-A comprehensible (even good) story

-Better characters...

It really can't be compared to FFXIII.

This.  Both games are linear, but there are waaaaay different degrees of linearity at play.

FFXIII=  Walk down a corridor, fight battles, repeat.

FFX= Walk down a corridor, fight battles, enter town, talk to NPCs, recruit people for blitzball, play blitzball, go into dungeon, complete puzzles, fight boss, repeat.

That's not to mention things like chocobo racing sequences, lightning plains, underwater sequences, and little things like that which add flavor and variety to the game.
