Play Twilight Princess, Wind Waker and Skyward Sword in any order, it'll determine which Zelda approach you like best.

I'm one of those who is not really big fan of OoT, so I know where you're coming from, but I liked TWP quite a bit - despite it being Aonuma Zelda, and more or less continuation of OoT design philosophy. Wind Waker is also good choice, some around here would argue that it is the best choice. ;) |
TP has aged very poorly imo.
I'd say Wind Waker.

Yup that is more than enough. I stay with A link to the Past, Twilight princess might be a good choice also.
As you didn't like Ocarina of Time, I am not sure I am the best suited person to make suggestion for you though...

Wind Waker (GC version on Wii since you don't have a Wii U).
If that doesn't work, A Link to the Past through Wii Virtual Console, or the GBA version (if you can find it) on your DS. If you don't feel like tracking down a GBA cartridge (I wouldn't blame you) and you're afraid that a SNES game would look absolutely stupid on your TV (they look godawful on my 42"), Oracle of Seasons or Oracle of Ages on the 3DS Virtual Console and Link Between Worlds on 3DS are acceptable substitutes.
If that also doesn't work, just stop. Zelda doesn't click with everyone.

The Zelda games sometimes can be different enough from each other to the point that it boils down to your personal tastes. Some people think OoT is overrated and they say TP is better. I've beaten both twice and I think OoT is better. Some say Windwaker is the best of them. I'm fighting the boss of the second dungeon om the Wii U version and so far, I'm not as estatic as I was two dungeons into any previous Zelda game. I have a Link between Worlds on 3DS and whole I'm only about 30% through, my brother and my roomate have both finished it. My brother thinks the arsenal is one of the best in the series and he really liked the game, while he hates the arsenal in Skyward Sword for being the lamest (in terms of destructive power) even though he loved Skyward Sword enough to beat it twice before I beat it even once.
So it all boils down to you. I'd suggest Skyward Sword over Twilight Princess though, and since you said Phantom Hourglass is too similar to Spirit Tracks, I'd suggest a Link between Worlds. Majora's Mask is the most different game in the series imo, but I personally loved it.

By the way guys, I think Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword are terrible choices for an entry point to the series. By no means do I dislike the games, but they take far too long to really get moving and have a sluggish pace throughout. I think if Twilight Princess had been my first Zelda game, I would have died of boredom before ever reaching a dungeon.
The absolute worst possible entry point for the series would be Majora's Mask, though. That game does nothing to help the player understand how to approach Zelda games. OP has finished Ocarina, so that's not really an issue, but he asked for an entry-level Zelda, so...

If you want to get into 3d console Zelda, I'd recommend Wind Waker. Tight controls, beautiful art style (well, that's subjective) as well as a vast, yet easy enough to explore world make this game perfect for newcomers. Wind Waker balanced the controls perfectly, so if you don't like it, chances are you wouldn't enjoy TP or SS either.

I wouldn't say so. I relatively recently replayed both WW and TWP with my kids (6 and 8)...I always liked TWP more, but I was surprised to see them both prefer it over WW (I was sure younger one would enjoy WW more).

A Link to the Past is my suggestion. It basically collated and formalized the Zelda formula. It's a perfect starting point if you want to familiarize yourself with the items, characters, enemies, themes, and overall structure of the series.
That being said, Zelda might not be for you. If Ocarina didn't surprise or impress you at all, then the series might have nothing to offer you.
Anyway, good luck!
