Porting a game once all of the assets are done isn't so bad. God of War Collection took 15 weeks.

There is also a quote from Ubisoft that porting a game should cost less than $1 million USD. That is a very small number compared to the number of lost sales.

PS: Following this thread logic one might assume that Sony´s effort with Infamous SS was pointless as (if VGChartz is correct) Watch Dogs made for the PS4 more than Infamous SS. |
Respawn, the developer, would not be marketing the game. That is up to the publisher (EA).
The porting of the game could have been outsourced, just like the 360 version was. This would have cost the publisher $1 million, give or take a bit.
Infamous SS has sold about 1.3 million copies. Sony, as the publisher and platform owner, would have made about $34 per copy, or about $44.2 million.
Watch_Dogs would make Sony about $7 in royalties per copy. So if all 4 million copies were sold on PS4 (which they weren't), it would have made $28 million for Sony. Realistically, the number is probably closer to 2.5 million on Sony platforms, or about $17.5 million. Based on this estimate, Watch_Dogs would have to sell another 3.8 million copies on Sony platforms (PS3 and PS4) to match what Infamous has earned.

Without Microsoft, Titanfall would simply not be here. It is not a matter of how much they give vs how much they get in return (or the potential) but more go or no-go for the whole project. |
I really don't get this. It practically goes agianst everything I know about the industry. Respawn is a studio "OWNED" by EA. The TitanFall IP is "OWNED" by respawn. I don't believe for a second that MS "funded" the game. Waht they did is buy exclusive rights for that game from EA and EA were dum enough to do it. Then again, it could be that the exclusive deal required MS to pay a certain amount to EA (who in turn would use that money to fund the games development) and then EA would also pay less to MS as royalties for the game and MS would also pay for the games marketing. Either way, the exclusivity was bought not that the game was funded into existance by MS.
So this without MS titanfall wouldn't be there is just bad spin. So what happened? EA being a publisher didnt have faith in the game that its newly aquired development team was making and refused to fund it so MS came in and saved the day? Yh, I don't think so.
Its a completely different matter if the IP is owned by MS and then MS subcontracts a development team from another publisher to make the game. Like Ryse and Gears of War.
reading the responses and all I got to say to the folks who thinks Titanfall would of flopped without MS; are you kidding me? New IP.. From the makers of MW & MW2, and you seriously think that a game in the likes of COD with mechs and people wouldn't be interested? Especially considering how big of a FPS dudebro population that exists in the gaming world? The game literally sold itself because of association with Vince Zampella and Jason West. Sure Respawn isn't IW, but you had the guys from IW that helped make IW what they were with MW1 & MW2, which still kills anything IW & Treyarch has done with COD since their departure. Titanfall might not of had to sell COD numbers, but I'm betting that they could of made so much more money had the game not go MS exclusive considering how much hype was building already before the exclusivity deal. Also, considering the game was releasing around console launch window time they would of sold just because most console launch window times don't have a large number of titles for release. You would have to think with UBi's success with a new multiplat IP and just as much advertising, Titanfall sales could of been even better had EA not gamble on exclusivity. Yes, almost 2-3 million on 3 platforms after 3+ months and dwindling... vs 4 mil in 1 wk. EA gambled wrong.
Man.. I hate it when your girl has to leave my place to come back to you..

Respawn is not owned by EA. They just signed a contract with EA which gives EA exclusive worldwide publishing and distribution rights to future games. With the EA Parners program (which is now closed), it let Respawn keep their IP.

That is the definition. Planetside is not exclusive.
Lets bear in mind games often go exclusive for financial reasons, not because they want to limit sales.
Maybe a large guaranteed profit is sometimes more appealing than a potential profit. Not all games live up to sales expectations.

I don't know how much of that I believe. Didn't initially Zampella say he wasn't aware and disappointed that EA did an exclusivity deal with MS?

I thought that happened when EA said it was a lifetime exclusive and not a timed exclusive, with Vince thinking that it would eventually come to the PS platforms.
