It was my understanding that the GC version was only slightly better graphically, and the PS2 version had additional content and features.

Exactly. People who tout the GC versions superiority have not played both (I have).
We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke
It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...." Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson
I'd fit into that first category of usually buying only one console as I was younger than and on a limited budget. Hopefully this generation I can grab more than one but with med school looming that may not happen as spare time will decrease quite rapidly.
I also like your statement rol about low price being meaningless if compared to "perceived value". Just because I wouldn't buy a $249 360/PS3 doesn't mean it's not worth it. It's just not worth it for me and what I look to get out of the consoles.
Also as far as the PS2/GC RE4 debacle. It goes like this Wii > PS2 > GC > PC
The PC version is trash as for some stupid reason they didn't have the mouse included in the controls. GC looks better than PS2 but the extras are better on PS2. Assignment Ada is useless but Separate Ways is actually pretty interesting and helps flesh out Ada's role throughout the game. The WIi version i'd say wins out because it has all the extra features of the PS2 plus the best controls (and even if you don't like those controls for whatever reason you can use a GC controller).
Basically because there were no games I wanted. There still aren't, but now that I've got a de facto GC through my Wii, I'm looking into games I've got a mild interest in since it's lying around anyway. If I can find them, I imagine I'll pick up Wind Waker and Eternal Darkness. That's probably all though.

i wasn't saying gamers play only certain genres. i was actually saying the exact opposite. people who are really gamers play a plethora of different games. as opposed to people who i say aren't true gamers who only play two different types of games and aren't at all interested in anything else.
i'm not saying you have to like all genres, i myself don't like realistic type racers like gran turismo cuz they are boring as anything, and 3d fighters i think are pretty crappy, and mini game compilations like mario party also i don't think are too good and would pretty much never buy one(only one i ever got was fuzion frenzy cuz twisted system in that game was awesome) but i like any other genre as long as i find the game to be fun. but if you only play one or two different types of games you're not really a gamer in the view of people who play games not because they have the aura of "being cool" but because they are fun to play which are the true hardcore.
the people who seem to be called the "hardcore" these days are these people that pretty much only play madden, fps, and gta. but they make up a decent part of the industry these days and are pretty much half the casual crew, with the other half being the type that only buy really simple games that are usually classified as casual games.

During the last generation, I just wasn't very interested in consoles. Hence, I didn't buy any, no matter how cheap.
PS: This thread is quite interesting, I hope it opens the eyes of some people here... but who am I kidding?

The controller wasn't half as good as a dual shock 2 and after having an n64 and snes I didn't want another mario another zelda etc... I suppose nintendo games don't appeal to me as much anymore. I had a PS2 since euro launch but bought a dreamcast and an xbox later. This generation I have a PS3 and will most likely buy a 360 when it's cheap.
