Eh they just wait until Final Fantasy XV I suppose.

2016? 2017?

Yes.

Consider PS4 will have every major 3rd party title across XB1 and PS4 (sans DQ11?), it'll eventually catch it. Just might be in a year or two.

Am i missing something here? didnt the PS4 just launch in japan around 3 months ago? And hasn't the wiiU been in japan for over 15 months now? or was it also delayed in japan?

Anyways, the PS4 will catch and pass the WiiU in japan. This is pretty much guaranteed when MGS5, FF15 and GT7 are released for it.

FF could end up doing little for the PS4, GT7 and MGS will have to fight with more Mario, more Pokemon, more Smash Bros, Zelda, etc.

Spin-off/online final fantasies never sell as well as mainline final fantasy games. And japan much like the rest of the world has been waiting for FFV13 (FF15) for a very very very very loooong time. GT7 and MGS5 are not even remotely in the same genre space with all the games you mentioned so they don't have to fight with those games. The kinda person that will go out and buy GT7 will not suddenly change their mind because they rather play Mario if you know what i mean.

Then in additin to this, there are more games like RE, KH3, Tekken and any other 3rd party brand that is usually popular over there. Over a period of 5 years I think its really easy for the PS4 to do at least 10ml in japan. If MK8 and then Zelda U doesn'tmove a whole lot of consoles, chances are that nintendo will struggle to even manage 20ml worldwide by the end of this generation. Big if, but under 5mil consoles sold in 12 months makes its seem like a no brainer projection.

Yes it can, it doesn't have a single big Japanese centric game yet and has yet to fire any of the big guns such Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid (not the demo we already got), Final Fantasy, GTA and Resident Evil as well as Tekken and other games. The PS4's library is still very young and small and reeks of Sony's efforts to prioritize the West.
Games like Killzone, inFamous, Ghosts, FIFA, Assassin's Creed, Need for Speed and other released titles were never going to have any impact on the Japanese market.

The PS4 is doing horribly in Japan, no doubt, but so is the Wii U and Nintendo has had a whole 15 month head start in this region and has released several pieces of software with actual appeal in this region as well as holding a price advantage.

Let's give it time. Like I've been saying though; no matter who comes out on top, it won't be a big win by any measure...

Nope. Both of them are bad. PS4 was just bad too late.

No doubt about it.

There is no Wii U turnaround, it's a failure of a console there. The PS4 will be too. And yes, PS4 will probably crawl its way to parity with Wii U in 2015/16 since Nintendo will have spent most of their big gun releases.

Zelda isn't a big franchise in Japan anymore, Sony has Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid, Tales, Dark Souls, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Grand Theft Auto (say what you want, but the last one outsold Skyward Sword and A Link Between Worlds) etc. that will eventually migrate to the system, after Mario Kart, Nintendo has Smash Brothers (which will likely be a diluted impact due to the 3DS version coming first) and NFC toys basically left.

Wii U's turnaround is about to move into full swing, with the first steps being shown in Japan this week where the system outsold PS4 by several thousand units.  With MK8 release scheduled for next week it appears Wii U is about to really start to expand its sales lead in the country and build on the substantial liftetime sales to date advantage.

Is there anything PS4 can do in the East to improve the situation?  Or is Wii U too strong to catch?

"Wii U's turnaround is about to move into full swing"--This site never ceases to amaze me, a single data point and extrapolate to grandiose outcomes.

"outsold PS4 by several thousand units". ~1,500 units is not several thousands

"With MK8 release scheduled for next week it appears Wii U is about to really start to expand its sales lead in the country and build on the substantial liftetime sales to date advantage"  We saw this type of expansion multiple times with the Wii U from games released over the past 18 months.

Is there anything PS4 can do in the East to improve the situation?  Or is Wii U too strong to catch?  What are the ramifications if the PS4 doesnt outsell the U?  Declined support?  The Wii outsold the PS3 by 30% in Japan, this occurance is nothing new and has not stopped the playstation brand from obtaining multiple exclusives despite its smaller userbase, It'll be the same with the PS4.
