As many know, Nintendo's Wii U has been quite the downer for Nintendo the past year and a half. Low amounts of games, bad marketing, and weak hardware have made the console seem as though it's irrelevant. Though it may not come in 2nd place this console war, and certainly not win, the odds are in Nintendo's favor to still make a profit off the console and its software. Here's a few things that help prove my point.
1. Look back at GameCube Like it or not, the GameCube was a great console. Well, to Nintendo's hardcore fans. Before that, all the Nintendo consoles combined had sold about 133 million units worldwide. They still racked up about 22 million GameCube sales lifetime. And the thing is, Nintendo's hardware was getting slower every time, not increasing but decreasing to every console. And the GameCube still sold 22 million. Now Nintendo needs to do one thing. Let people know the Wii U isn't a Wii. The Wii sold as much as the NES and SNES combined, and nearly double the amount of N64 and GameCube combined. Even if half of the Wii fans bought a Wii U, and let's say 10 million just didn't like Nintendo and weren't fans of it, the console would still sell 40 MILLION. That's more than the GameCube or Nintendo 64.
2. Incredible IP's Another thing people think is hurting Nintendo is the lack of new IP's. However, Nintendo has been making new IP's, and though not a lot, quite a few have appeared recently. Let's use The Wonderful 101 for example. Great game. Bombed. Series like Zelda, Mario, Donkey Kong, Pikmin, and Lego City currently lead the Wii U in software sales. All the games have done is grow since the GameCube era, and though games like Smash Bros and Mario Kart aren't the ticket to 150,000 Wii U's sold weekly the rest of its life, they are bound to help. I know Wii Sports aided the Wii super greatly, but it is too late to make a killer IP that uses the GamePad. To show off the GamePad, Nintendo will need to use an old but cherished IP.
3. The Gaming Market as a Whole has Grown Though many believe last gen was the peak of console gaming, that is hard to agree with. XBOX One and PS4 are both outpacing their predecessors, and once Wii U catches on, it will start to sell more than the Wii. Though it won't lifetime sales, I personally think the Wii U's peak will outshine the Wii's, and same with 3DS. I forsee this being a strong console generation, and even if it is the last it will for sure still be a great one.
