NES and SNES were not niche consoles. No Nintendo console has ever had more 3rd party support than those guys.

NES, a niche console?...perhaps it was in Europe, but in the U.S. it was the complete opposite.

Anyway, yes they do... they need, more than ever, a self sustaining ecosystem and this would be one of the blocks that make up the system.

They don't need those studios. They're already making exclusive Nintendo games, and Shin'en doesn't make games that appeal to the audience their lacking. They make very niche games.

Nintendo needs enough diverse games coming in to make people not miss 3rd party. (as much) They really do need that one big game a month roll out.

Considering how the Western dev scene has studios closing every other week due to the fact that they can't seem to manage themselves properly, it's not in Nintendo's best interests to do that. Why waste money on companies that clearly aren't disciplined or skilled enough to be trusted?

Sony also has good 2nd party support from western companies making games like beyond two souls and The Order 1886
