So you mean to tell me that Nintendo screwed over Sony and Phillips? That makes excellent material for my book.

When it comes to Sony, Nintendo screwed themselves.

no they did not, they saved themselves.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

While the partially incorrect history lesson is nice... it has nothing to do with this.

Its simply about money and potentially Nintendo's stated push into Quality of Life products where Philips already exists.

Nintendo hired Sony to do a cd drive for N64..

Sony saw all the money in videogaming (or may have done that from start) and suddently they would have the rights to sell games on nintendo's system.. (and becourse there was a "hole" in the contract, they could) That Nintendo would offcourse not let them.. and therefor sony made the ps1 almost 1 year before N64..

It was a very ugly move from sony.. imo

CD games, they had the rights for CD games. They wanted to be more than a one time manufacturer. For that one system.

Nintendo already had a patent on all games made with their cartridges. Not only did 3rd parties have to pay a royalty for that, but also to put the game on the consoles and they had to follow Nintendo's explicit rules such as no more than 4 games a year irc. 3rd parties were effectively owned by Nintendo.

Not to mention the contract was only canceled after the E3 reveal of the system. Sony went to E3, revealed the Nintendo Playstation, and then Nintendo announced that they were working with Phillips. Nintendo didn't want to comprise and wanted complete ownership of the system with Sony just manfacturing for them.

That's a heartless move from Nintendo imo.

What they did was the equivalent of not only standing a girl up at prom but showing up there with another date.

So you think Nintendo went to sony and sayd.. "We like you to make a cd drive for our next console.. and we give all the rights"

And Nintendo did not own "cartridges" both sega and atari had them to.. (but yes Nintendo made 3rd parties pay for use them on thire system)

Nintendo canceled the contract after seing, what sony was about to,

And 100% sure Sony knew Nintendo would cancel, when it was clear to them that Sony had found a loophole, that would give them theese "rights"

Train: You could call it very very smart.. but still kind off back stabing

No, Nintendo loves control more than any of the big 3. But considering Sony wanted to get in on the console buisness rather than simply be a manufacturer. Then this was less risky then what they ended up doing regardless.

Atari was never real competition for Nintendo, and Sega was hardly a threat. Nintendo owned the cartridge technology that they used so it was either develop for Nintendo or develop for the competition and see your game flop.

Nintendo canceled the contract after seing, what sony was about to,

Nintendo knew exactly what Sony wanted to do thats why they had negotiations. Sony, did not know about phillips until they had already announced it at E3. Sony was left with a Nintendo Playstation that couldn't play Nintendo games, had no 3rd party relations, no prior knowledge in the field, not anything.

Nintendo and Sony both wanted control of the there respective parts of the console, to suggest that Nintendo wasn't as greedy as Sony is just revisionist history. The way they canceled the deal was a pretty nasty move considering the money Sony had put into the system.

And 100% sure Sony knew Nintendo would cancel, when it was clear to them that Sony had found a loophole, that would give them theese "rights"

If they knew Nintendo would cancel, they wouldn't have gone to E3 with the Nintendo PlayStation. There was no loophole, the contract was as clear as day. Sony would have rights to the CD games, Nintendo would have rights to the cartridge games.

I find it funny that whenever people talk negatively concerning Sony, they are painted as the agressor when they are obviously the victim in this case. Irregardless, of whatever happened behind company doors. The fact that Nintendo let Sony go to E3, and then publicly announced that phillips was its manufacturer is a seriously disgusting move.

I always wonder why it takes so many years for companies to bring up patent disputes.

Surely they should have attempted to gain royalties when the Wii was drowning in money?

Current Game Machines: 3DS, Wii U, PC.

Currently Playing: X-Com(PC), Smash Bros(WiiU), Banner Saga(PC), Guild Wars 2(PC), Project X Zone(3DS), Luigis Mansion 2(3DS), DayZ(PC)

we should send some shit to Philips for the CD-i games...

Can't exactly take things seriously when two things in this article are blatently false; Wii isn't discontinued anywhere and Nintendo didn't help Philips develop the CD-i. They did that all by themselves. Guess fact-checking wasn't their specialty.

That's revisionist history for you. It's doubly funny because from all accounts, the main guys at Sony didn't have much faith in video games at all. After Nintendo effectively and rather publicly insulted them, they then decided to push ahead into the industry on their own. Even then, they had little support from the other departments  who perceived it as a waste of time. Then the PS1 happened.

Its the real reason. ^^
