yeah but markets change.

People bitched that they lost their jobs when machines came in, but eventually they got over it and found other jobs.

People who live off advertising will do the same... they will whine for a bit and then find another way to make money. Nothing lasts forever.

I dont think we cant tell who has enabled monitization but obviously those who upload copyrighted content wont have (I assume google doesnt pay them even if they signed up for it) and theres plenty of people uploading things like football highlights and movies just for the benefit of others, not themselves. Then theres people who make their own content but dont monetize it. I do not believe 100% of youtubers (those who have uploaded videos) are earning money from them and if this option was taken I dont think all of them would stop making videos overnight. Clearly a lot of them are attention whores and want to be celebrities which may possibly be a bigger factor than the peanuts they earn from the adverts on their videos.

No not 100% of course, but it would shrink considerably, most adult people don't have an abundance of time to create a ton of content, if there's nothing in it for them. Money makes the world go round, face it.

Money may make the world go round but that doesn't mean that every person in the world is consumed by greed and the pursuit of financial gain. Not everyone has Ayn Rand mentality. There are plenty of artists on youtube and in the world that do it simply because they are passionate about it and it brings them joy.

No, they don't. There is a difference between clicks that are monetizable and clicks that aren't, if someone uses Adblock and watches a Youtube video, then the creator gets absolutely nothing.

Which is also exactly the point Pachter was making, if there's no money in the internet anymore then the content creators will go somewhere else.

That's not true. Have you ever made money off a youtube upload? They get paid per video view, whether or not the ad was seen it still goes to view count and they still get money for it.

Here is the thing, there are good reasons to block ads, with a plugin or otherwise:

1 - willingly or not some ad-networks spread malware, they can infect your computer

2 - I don't want my kid to end up on a casino site

3 - wether or not you want it, you pay for the "free" content, about 12% of everything you buy (don't ask me for a source, it's a number I saw somewhere) if every one blocked ads they could instead recoup some of this money and buy what they want to read instead... If the gaming journalists did more than re-posting gaming companies PR lines/trailers.... That would work for all sorts of media too.
