You just have to keep making this harder on yourself, don't you ? Linux IS an OS. That is a fact so you might want to go deal with it as soon as possible. We already told you why steam OS can't be based on windows and that's because Gabe Newell's idiotic paranoia means that he'll keep being anti windows and as well as the fact that Microsoft won't have anyone fucking around with windows source code. 

You literally just said that the reason Steam OS can't be on Windows was because they are both OS's so it literally can't, which makes no sence if Linux is also an OS. Now you're saying it's just because of a petty grudge, in which I ask again, why can't Gabe just get over himself and do what he's doing with Linux on the platform with more games?

It is it's own OS much like windows. 

If you badly so want to play these precious third party games I suggest you stick with the HD twins. (This is your only and final option despite the fact that you'll likely ignore this recommendation as steam machines will NOT get worthwhile games. Just you wait and see how that thing will turn out and you'll be thankful about it later on ...)

Linux is an operating system....

It is owned by no one and is opensource so a company can take it and make it into anything they want. You use Linux every day of your life and do not even know it ;)

Steam OS can not be based on Windows because Microsoft owns Windows not Steam and MS would NEVER allow them to. You should just stick to the Wii U because SteamMachines are not a fit for you....

How were you able to adequately answer a simple question without having a heart attack in literally one sentense? Thanks. I get it now. Can I ask why you don't think that steam machines are a fit for me? I'm not arguing your sentiments. I'm just trying to pick your brain, since you aren't coming off like an asshole just because I have an unpopular idea of what I want.

No offense, it seems to me that your mind has been made even before a single answer was posted, and you just wanted some validation from the forum. I hadn't made any choice until after users here, who actually understood my question, answered it. Once someone starts bringing buying a PC, XBO, or PS4 into the conversation, they stop understanding my question and I stop paying attention to them. Those consoles/PS are not better options for me. I'm not asking what is a good alternative for 3rd party games. I'm asking if the $500 Steam Machine, isolated from comparisons to anything else, is a good place to play 3rd party games. I've gotten the answer. As it is now, no, because it's linux based or something so most of the 3rd party games I'll want to play won't be playable on it. So I've now made the choice to wait and see, where as what I was planning to do up until the start of this thread was not buy anything because, again, I don't really care either way. If it ever gets really good support, then I'll consider it again.

Online subscription is my only animosity with those systems. I like pretty much everything else about them.

That because Linux is half-assed. Why in the fuck would a regular end user want to mess with a POS that is cluttered up with crap ?

I'll admit that it has it's uses but it's extremely limiting for the rest of the world.

Because Steam OS is basically Debian (A Linux Distro) with a customized UI. There will more than likely be configuring at one point or another and I can not reccommend a Steam Machine to anyone but nerds. I am personally considering getting one myself to be honest but it is not for the "mainstream" gamer and I do not believe it ever will be. There is no reason Linux can not play games as good as Windows (The PS3 OS is based on Linux) but Windows is the established norm and do to that SteamMachines are almost certainly doomed to fail =/

I have  used Steam on Linux for quite a while and the vast majority of the games that are being made for it are Indie games, which is fine but it will never get the AA/AAA games I think you are looking for.

 

I think "fatslob-:O" works for Microsoft so I would avoid his opinions...... I know this is going off subject for you but he seems to think Linux in general is bad and that is not true. Everyone I know who works in the field of computers in one way or another uses Linux as their primary OS.

That's not the question you asked ... You asked why it was not based off of windows and I clearly gave you an answer.

Even if Gabe got over himself, Microsoft still wouldn't let Valve fuck around with the source code ...

I gave programed using CSS/HTML C++, and Visual Studios..... So yeah....

Because it is what people know and it comes on their computers?

 

In computer related fields Linux is the norm.

It is faster, more stable, more customizable, more secure, and does not waste hours upon hours updating. You have probably used more time updating in the past week using Windows 8 than I have in the past year updating my PC.....
