I already said I'll wait and see. I'm not getting the PS4/XBO. They are not an option. There is no other option. It's get it or don't. I don't "so badly want to play these precious third party games." I have a passing intrest in playing these third party games if the stars line up.

What is linux if it isn't an OS? Why can't Steam OS be "based" on Windows instead? (Don't have an anurism. Just answer the question or don't.)

Spemanig, it seems that you've already made a choice. No need to let this devolve into animosity.
No offense, it seems to me that your mind has been made even before a single answer was posted, and you just wanted some validation from the forum. Sadly, you haven't received it, we even tried hard to objectively explain SM's drawbacks. But it's your money and your choice, no need for anyone to try and convince you the opposite of your choice.

But the title is asking for an answer for any Nintendo owner. So to any other person with similar doubts - there are 3 better options than SM: PC, PS4 and X1, and all are a better value for money proposition.

Can we all now quit while we're ahead?

The engineering students and computer science students as well as my other peers don't seem to agree with your sentiment as they use windows at a day to day basis without mindlessly giving anmosity towards it. 

LOL Windows is terrible. Period. (Linux FTW). Also I work in IT and NOBODY runs WIndows as their primary OS

Libre Office and MS Office are every bit as good as MS Office. Period.

 

The only issue is MS Office is the standard and the rest have got to be compatible with it which can cause issues.

Don't beat the bush around and instead be more direct ... <--- That's some advice that you'll need. 

To the question ... 

You just have to keep making this harder on yourself, don't you ? Linux IS an OS. That is a fact so you might want to go deal with it as soon as possible. We already told you why steam OS can't be based on windows and that's because Gabe Newell's idiotic paranoia means that he'll keep being anti windows and as well as the fact that Microsoft won't have anyone fucking around with windows source code.

Linux is an operating system....

It is owned by no one and is opensource so a company can take it and make it into anything they want. You use Linux every day of your life and do not even know it ;)

Steam OS can not be based on Windows because Microsoft owns Windows not Steam and MS would NEVER allow them to. You should just stick to the Wii U because SteamMachines are not a fit for you....

I believe SteamMachines come with Windows 8 and Steam OS. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Just saying we do not know about the true "value" yet

No.

I hadn't made any choice until after users here, who actually understood my question, answered it. Once someone starts bringing buying a PC, XBO, or PS4 into the conversation, they stop understanding my question and I stop paying attention to them. Those consoles/PS are not better options for me. I'm not asking what is a good alternative for 3rd party games. I'm asking if the $500 Steam Machine, isolated from comparisons to anything else, is a good place to play 3rd party games. I've gotten the answer. As it is now, no, because it's linux based or something so most of the 3rd party games I'll want to play won't be playable on it. So I've now made the choice to wait and see, where as what I was planning to do up until the start of this thread was not buy anything because, again, I don't really care either way. If it ever gets really good support, then I'll consider it again.

If you question that Linux is not superior to Windows in virtually every way then you are absolutely not "in the know" when it comes to computers......

Why do you think all of the world's super computers, the vast majority of servers, and even the stock exchange work on Linux?.....

 

I have yet to meet anyone working in IT (or my computer science friends) who do not hate Windows and avoid it whenever possible.

 

If you believe that about Libre Office than you have never used it.... As I said before the only times it EVER has problems is when it has got to be compatible with MS Office.
