Linux is an operating system....

It is owned by no one and is opensource so a company can take it and make it into anything they want. You use Linux every day of your life and do not even know it ;)

Steam OS can not be based on Windows because Microsoft owns Windows not Steam and MS would NEVER allow them to. You should just stick to the Wii U because SteamMachines are not a fit for you....

How were you able to adequately answer a simple question without having a heart attack in literally one sentense? Thanks. I get it now. Can I ask why you don't think that steam machines are a fit for me? I'm not arguing your sentiments. I'm just trying to pick your brain, since you aren't coming off like an asshole just because I have an unpopular idea of what I want.

Because Steam OS is basically Debian (A Linux Distro) with a customized UI. There will more than likely be configuring at one point or another and I can not reccommend a Steam Machine to anyone but nerds. I am personally considering getting one myself to be honest but it is not for the "mainstream" gamer and I do not believe it ever will be. There is no reason Linux can not play games as good as Windows (The PS3 OS is based on Linux) but Windows is the established norm and do to that SteamMachines are almost certainly doomed to fail =/

I have  used Steam on Linux for quite a while and the vast majority of the games that are being made for it are Indie games, which is fine but it will never get the AA/AAA games I think you are looking for.

 

I think "fatslob-:O" works for Microsoft so I would avoid his opinions...... I know this is going off subject for you but he seems to think Linux in general is bad and that is not true. Everyone I know who works in the field of computers in one way or another uses Linux as their primary OS.


So the whole idea that a steam machine is supposed to simplify the gaming aspects of PC for casual consumers isn't true? Bummer. And you're right, while I do enjoy indie games, I'm not going to buy a $500 box when it isn't compatible with the types of games I'm buying it to play which are, like you said, mainly AA/AAA games.

And yeah, I'm just not going to respond to him.

It should be more simple than regular PC gaming but I do not expect it to be like a console or anything. A SteamMachine is still a computer.

I mean, from video's I've seen on beta testers, it looks like it runs pretty similar to the UI of like the XBO and PS4. I don't really care if it technically still is a PC if it doesn't feel like one when I'm playing games. I do care if I can't play the games I want to play though, like one of the things I was looking forward to was playing a lot of the really cheap back catalog of AAA games on Steam, like GTA IV or Bioshock, but those aren't linux supported. (I just checked)

Isn't there a program called Wine that lets people play Windows games on non windows devices? Why doesn't Valve just have a program like that running in the background of Steam OS for the Steam Machine so people could still play those Windows games?

Wine only works for DX9 supported games ... Anything that requires DX10 and up your mostly out of luck. Plus you have to install that yourself ...

The engineering students and computer science students as well as my other peers don't seem to agree with your sentiment as they use windows at a day to day basis without mindlessly giving anmosity towards it. 

I've been working with only Linux for 4 years. My friends who are software engineers only work with linux. Every single computer science student that's been worth his salt has worked mainly on Linux.

I can program my OS to do ANYTHING I want. I go alt+ctrl+tab and then $work and every single pdf is opened where it was, my coding workspace is opened, my work music is opened, my work diary etc. etc. Anything I want. If I type $work2 then a different set of things is loaded. I can literally make my OS do anything and I can do it for free. 

Your peers just haven't been introduced to something better. Same as me until 4 years ago. Once you see that (for instance) Ubuntu does every single thing Windows does then you can't ignore the facts.

There are obviously a few things, but they'll be added and are hardly important are they? And there are things that MS office also doesn't do - have a look. No two horses are the same, but these two are so similar that a layman can jump in and use one or the other.

Literally the only issue is that if you've been working on MS office and send a file to someone on Libre office, then certain things in the document might be wrong. But this is 100% MS's fault as they choose to do so: For instance with their macros in excel. You can import your macros from Libre, but not vica versa.

Nobody is angry. They are just smarter. I run Ubuntu, Debian and Mint off the same workstation with a dynamic boot. Did you know I can open and run files from Linux that are installed on a Windows partition? Can you do that? No, not even close. Along with a million other things.

The only reason I'm even considering a Steambox is because, on paper, it sounds like exactly what I'm personally looking. As someone who literally just plays games casually. If it's not what I want, I just won't buy it. I don't care.

I would like to tentatively suggest to you to broaden your horizons. If the experiment is failed then it was just a little money that you lost. It won't hurt very much and you might end up experiencing things that you never that good. Please heed my call and go do something a little crazy (for you).
