This was unmanned though, thankfully.  Only a supply mission to the International Space Station.

Way too low. 

I think you'll need something in the ballpark of >2Mb/s to be a host. Download should be ok for a guest I guess.

You tried fiddling with the high/low quality options? If you're both in AUS you at least should have decent lag if you'll make it work.
