This is something that has always bothered me. One of the main praises that FFVI get, is that the entire cast is well-developed and meaningul to the story - so much so, that you can't even define who the protagonist is.

I saw the complete opposite: the most inflated cast on the series. Half of the characters are completely useless (in battle, in the story, or both. Mostly both). I can clearly see the protagonist on the first half is Terra, and Celes is the main character of the second half (which is a trainwreck btw, but whatever). In the game's defense, the ones who matter are pretty good. Edgar and Sabin are two of my favorites on the series, but guys, are you seeing something I'm not? It's not a troll attempt, I'm genuinely interested in why people love the game's cast SO MUCH.

I'd say big part of why you don't care too much for the game is because your spoiled by today's offerings in the RPG genres, you never got to experience the game when it was first released on the limited hardware at the time so you can never understand why the game gathers so much love. Yes nostalgia may play a role in the game's greatness but it not the only reason.

Btw VI is not my favorite RPG or FF game either so don't assume i am 1 of those FFVI loyalist who gathers a pitchfork and torch when someone questions it's greatness haha but i do understand why the game is considered so good. Btw how do you feel about Chrono Trigger?

I agree with you. I played FFVI last year and when i finished i said "For me FF7 still the best FF. FF6 was a very good game but if I had played in PS1 era instead I would probably think that this is the best one. " (I didnt had a snes and I have played FF4 and Chrono Trigger in PS)

I am about as confused as you. I think its a decent game, but it certainly doesnt reach the levels of VII and IX.

I believe its the nostalgia. I am sure that for the time it came out, it was a really good game.

You are kidding me right??!? FFVII characters are as flat as they come. Cloud is a prick emo kid that can't even tell someone to fuck off. Sephiroth is some sort of evil mutant that has mommy issues. And the rest of the cast are Tifa who basically is your typical slutty high school girl. Aeris typical goody goody girl. Barret who is a stereotypical black guy that is offensive to the black community in the U.S. and a huge evil woman that was in charge of an orphanat. i won't get into the rest because they are not memorable, except perhaps for Cid.

The only reason why FF 7 is considered a classic is because it came out in the dominating console when videogaming finally became popular rather than a nerd hobby. I would take FF3 characters over FF 7 any day. Plus, the only twist in FF 7 that was worth playing for was when Aeris died. Outside of that, the game was your typical RPG game with new twists on combat (materia development).

Lets be honest here. Even if i agreed with you, wich i dont, the fact is no FF has truly great character interaction. The tales series schools FF in that front. FF is about the story of the worlds they live in.

The useless character ratio is still way smaller than FFIV's

I can somewhat see your point, the cast was large and diverse enough that it can feel over-inflated at times, but the important characters were all well developed with rich and intriguing side-stories. Throughout the game it felt like a true ensemble of characters with varying motivations brought together by dire circumstances.

I still prefer FFVII and Chrono Trigger in terms of cast and story.

I love when people make these sweeping generalisations in these Final Fantasy discussions. Your FF VII character descriptions could fit into nearly any Final Fantasy game's character list (FF VI included). They all use established tropes.

I think there is no question that Terra is the central character, with Celes taking a significant role at the start of the second half. That said, you could make the case the Locke is the protagonist or hero.

But I think why people like it is there is variety in the characters, but also that you really can choose who you play as for the most part. Personally I rarely used Terra and played with Edgar in the lead for most of the game since he was my favorite. Since you can equip espers and give your party abilities, you can also use whatever characters you want.

I think that's also the flaw, you can make super characters by grinding and being able to use whatever character you want makes all of the characters less important or central. I preferred the style of FFIV with each character having a specific story role and set abilities. My favorite party system is X where you get to sub in characters with specific skills for specific foes. VI is OK, but not my favorite style.

Only people who saved Cid should be allowed a opinion in this matter

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

I see some people praising the characters' unique abilities as well. The only unique abilities I've used consistenly were Tools and Blitz. Bushido and Trance quickly became obsolete, Runic and Steal were situational, Rage and Blue Magic take way too much effort, and Sketch and Slots are completely useless. So in the end, all the characters are pretty much the same, thanks to the Espers. I'll give you Throw, that could deal a lot of damage. But meh.

I find that FFIV, IX and X do a MUCH better job at making each character feel different in battle.

Just a sidenote, I've also noticed that many FFVI fans feel the urge to dismiss FFVII. Every time the discussion becomes Final Fantasy VI, someone is sure to mention FFVII as a vastly inferior game for a number of reasons. I don't get that.

Please read the thread again. Nobody mentioned FFVII until it was denoted as the better game.
