I have a hard time believing the Wii-U is still sold at a loss. The hardware really shouldn't be so expensive. If true though the Wii-U might be  a bigger design/pricing fiasco then the ps3 when it first launched

Hardly; PS3 was losing an estimated $241-$307 per unit at launch.

Maybe not from a pure financial point of view, but marketing wise probably just as bad. Atleast the PS3 hade Blu-Ray that Sony wanted to push that partly made it so expensive.

How did Nintendo end up with such an outdated console that's apperently only $100 cheaper or even less to produce than a PS4. The Wii-U is basically a 360 with a slightly more powerfull but newer gpu and more memory, but that memory is slower and so is the cpu. And the screen in the controller can't be that expensive either.

It simply looks like way to shabby of a deal, that's why i can't imagine them really making a loss on it.

The controller is what's inflating the cost.

Nintendo still has a lot of money in the bank but they shouldn't make a habit of having a loss every quarter.

Not anymore. Among that $8 billion assets they had around $4 billion as hard cash. Rest were assets. They are burning those cash pretty fast.

Spending 1.1B$ on their own shares is not "burning cash". That's more of an investment then anything else.

Predictions for LT console sales:

PS4: 120M

XB1: 70M

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

I was reffering to the fact that they have less "cash" (liquid asstes) in hand. Plus increased R & D and increased marketing cost will contribute in buring "liquid assets". Nintendo will be in bigger problem than sony in future if they dont react.

Future as in 20 years? Sony is one of the most indebted corporations in the world with over 140 billion dollars in debt. Don't even compare both companies because their situation is not even remotely comparable.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

But

But

They actually BOUGHT buildings and filled them with staff! They BETTA have some sort of magic explaination for this trickery, or else we can expect another few months of people telling us how doomed they are and how they should explore business ventures that would fuck them up in a very actual way.

I think he meant liabilities,  on page F-13 of Sony's recent report it says they have 11,522,117 Million yen in total liabilities.

That's around 112.5 Billion USD in total liabilities. - http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/13q3_sony.pdf

I imagine Nintendo will slowly kill off the WiiU and go full on handheld and their QOL thing whatever that is...I still think its going to be a cheap product in the 99- 150 range dedicated to help the consumer lose weight, but we'll see.

PSn - greencactaur

It's because they are obsessed with weird, niche design ideals like having a very small console, and one that consumes little electricity. To get that you have to spend a lot of R&D and have a heavily customized chip, which makes it more expensive.

If they had just used a more off-the-shelf component from AMD, who has literally probably dozens of GPUs that could've fit the bill, they probably could've gotten something a lot cheaper.

Anyways, I suspect losses for this fiscal year won't be the end of it. They will lose money next fiscal year too (year ending March 2015) with the way that 3DS sales are starting to decline already, the Wii U is not going to be able to pick up the slack. Maybe after that with the QoL thing and a new handheld (possibly) for 2015/16 they can start to turn things around.
