You also have to consider with so many jumping back on to PS this gen, and the slowing sales of the One, what's going to happen to that Live money once they stop supporting the servers for 360 games?  360 owners will have no reason to pay for Live, anymore.  So, that Live revenue is going to drop significantly this gen, both in subs AND game sales.

I think you have that backwords.

Companies shut down servers because their games don't sell anymore and aren't bringing in any new money.  Not just because it's old.

The servers will scale to the number of 360 subscribers they have, not the other way around.

As long as there are people paying for Xbox live on 360.  They will keep 360 servers up.

Servers are really cheap.

Xbox live is only a part of the xbox division. Are you going to  ignore the fact that there has been serious discussion about selling the xbox division? (I don't remember if it was from an investor or a CEO). There's only so much money xboxlive can make on its own. If you factor all they money they spent for first party games, advertising, tv stuff, exclusives/timed exclusives, etc, it is likely that it is actually not doing well. Especially considering how many price cuts xb1 has had so far.

Also, do you think that responses such as "lol oooook" have a place in a serious discussion? I find them very disrespectful. If you seriously disagree with someone, explain why and if you think they're not worth yout time, simply ignore them.

Just my two cents.

You said that the "profits" of the Xbox division are Skype and Android Royalties. Xbox Live Gold subscriptions are also a part of that. There was no serious discussion of selling Xbox, there was the guy who people thought was going to be MS new CEO saying that he would heavily consider selling off the devices and bing division. He is not the CEO.

If you payed attention to the Quarterly Earnings Kowen posted you would see that MS does "make one red cent on Xbox"

I said what now?

As for the Quarterly Earning, no, I haven't read that thread, but I have heard that ms doesn't reveal how much xbox does on its own. If they are all put together, how can we know how much they're making from xbox? There's a reason Sony also tries to hide how badly the vita/psp are/were doing buy mixing sales of different hardware together.

Except if you really do your research, MS doesn't make one red cent on Xbox.  Nearly all of the "profits" of the Xbox division are actually Skype and Android royalties. Sure MS's holiday was great - but that was owed to a turnaround of Surface and Windows 8. X1 pushes up revenues, but doesn't contribute profits to Microsoft when all is said and done.

When it comes to the future for PS4 and X1, both are standing are far more shaky ground than most would expect. In X1's case, MS has more profitable things it could do (though the new MS CEO seems pro-Xbox for now). In the case of Sony, the iceberg is melting and everyone's about to get wet...

So Xbox Live isn't profitable? lol oooook

I'm afraid I'm with Kasz on this one. But yeah, if the xb1 doesn't start doing considerably better, it is likely that xblive subsriptions will drop quickly.

Hang in there Sony, it makes the PS4 leading teh console warz all the more delicious,

And yet, this gen we have seen servers turned off on games that were only 1-2 years old, either to make room for newer games and/or make gamers move onto the newer games.  MS did it with OG Xbox servers, so it will happen on the 360, too.  And I'm sure Sony will eventually do it for PS3, as well.  I'm not saying it's going to happen next year, but it WILL happen.

What does Sony shutting down servers of 1-2 year old games have to do with MS shutting down OG Xbox servers back in 2010 when the 360 doubled Xbox sales?

It is kind of inspirational that Xbox is getting lapped by PlayStation when his mother is undergoing chemotherapy.

Its also sad.

and hilarious.

Especially the comments about those hoping to win so badly that they wish for the collapse of Sony because they've lost hope in Halo and Price Cut, and TitanFall wasn't enuff.

But hey, dats what Console Warz are all about, salty tears.

Yep, cause cause it was only Sony who shut down servers on specific games.

The fact is the servers WILL get shut down.  Whether it's 1 or 2 or 3 years, it WILL happen.  They aren't just going to keep them going forever.  Even without the servers being shut down, more and more gamers are going to move on, and therefore feel less inclined to pay for Live on their older console.  Either way, the point is that the way things are going, Sony is going to benefit the most from people switching gens as far as online revenue goes.  They are now making money off of it thanks to PS+.  For MS, however, the One, in it's current state, is not going to come close to the 360 (probably selling around 60M-65M), which means a drop in Live subs and revenue.
