I think you have that backwords.

Companies shut down servers because their games don't sell anymore and aren't bringing in any new money.  Not just because it's old.

The servers will scale to the number of 360 subscribers they have, not the other way around.

As long as there are people paying for Xbox live on 360.  They will keep 360 servers up.

Servers are really cheap.

And yet, this gen we have seen servers turned off on games that were only 1-2 years old, either to make room for newer games and/or make gamers move onto the newer games.  MS did it with OG Xbox servers, so it will happen on the 360, too.  And I'm sure Sony will eventually do it for PS3, as well.  I'm not saying it's going to happen next year, but it WILL happen.

What does Sony shutting down servers of 1-2 year old games have to do with MS shutting down OG Xbox servers back in 2010 when the 360 doubled Xbox sales?

Yep, cause cause it was only Sony who shut down servers on specific games.

The fact is the servers WILL get shut down.  Whether it's 1 or 2 or 3 years, it WILL happen.  They aren't just going to keep them going forever.  Even without the servers being shut down, more and more gamers are going to move on, and therefore feel less inclined to pay for Live on their older console.  Either way, the point is that the way things are going, Sony is going to benefit the most from people switching gens as far as online revenue goes.  They are now making money off of it thanks to PS+.  For MS, however, the One, in it's current state, is not going to come close to the 360 (probably selling around 60M-65M), which means a drop in Live subs and revenue.
