i dont know if all the feedback S-E is getting about this matter is a good thing. LEts be honest guys, traditional turn-based RPG are outdated and ii think is kinda scary to see this amount of support for the "go back to your roots" arguments.

Well, maybe is just me

Why is it outdated? Some of the most popular RPGs are turn based (Pokemon, Dragon Quest for example), and even some of the most popular iOS/Android RPGs are turn based ones. They're very popular still and It's good that they are. They're very strategic in comparison to most mindless button mashing action RPGS.

first of all, most popular RPGs are action based (skyrim, fallout, ME, etc)...

To be unable to update to today's standars is the principal cause for the decline of the JRPG as a genre in the 7th generation. Besides this game mechanic actually exist due hardware limitations (there are some exception out there but still..)

Around the Network

I'd like some FFXII or FFVIII upgrade next.

Everyone so hung up on the combat system when talking about JRPGs being outdated.

The hell with the battle system.

Give me a epic story of the likes we haven't experienced since Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV, etc...

I don't care if it's turn based or paradigm shifts or whatever, just give me story revelations that permanently scar my psyche.  Stop with the half ass last minute shoe string stories while over "innovating" everything else to death for no practical reason other than just to say you did.

900 CGI artists and no writer, or Michael Bay for your writer. That's a swell recipe for JRPGs, hows that been working out for ya?

dude that comment i dont know wat to make of it cause when last i checked u spend 90% of rpgs battling and if that combat aint good then people wont play tru to the end to c the "epic story"

I suffered through Xenogears' clunky outdated mechanics having only first played it in the 360 PS3 era.

It's my #1 game of all time now.

Hint: it's not because of the battle system.

Battle systems have never made the hairs on my neck curl or stand up.

FF XII Zodiac or FF VII, personnally. And a brand new awesome FInal Fantasy game. That would be swell. Go Square.

Just because you have an opinion doesn't mean you are necessarily right.

Nah.  Unrealistic investor driven unsustainable growth at all costs business models which favor zero investment fast turn around copy paste FPS games and widest possible dumbed down market appeal did away with the JRPG.  Can't afford limos making quality games that take 4 years to make and sell under a million units when you have a staff of 10 developers and 5000 administrators, bureaucrats , investors, and others with business degrees instead of programming degrees.

outdated?

pokemon is turn based... and it still can sell more than 15 million units

yeah sure, cod players used to be JRPG gamers. Plus, i know it hurts, you cant blame all people other than developers if they dont meet with their agenda.

SCREW YOU ITS THE BEST GAME EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In all seriousness, I definitely don't think turn based games are in the past. I don't always want games where I am racing to do everything. I like being able to sit back and plot my strategies in my own time

Just look at XCOM, not so much of a traditional turn based RPG, but still really successful, both critically and commercially.

But there's a reason I've played 50 hours of FFX HD since it came out and haven't even bought Lightning Returns

It's actually done very slightly better than that - Vgchartz didn't track all the Vita SKUs for standalone FFX and FFX-2, which accounts for about 40k and there's another 10k or so from the digital figures we've been getting monthly from Famitsu, so the Vita version is sitting at ~430k.

Glad to see it do well, if you add the extra 50k then FFX/X-2 is at 1.14m, which matches KH 1.5, but it's done so in a far shorter length of time (KH has been out for over a year, it's less than 4 months for this)
