Nintendo are still stuck in the mind set of just throwing more Mario at something and expecting success.  That only works so much and they've done it too often in recent years and now they've worn it out.  NSMBU didn't shift WiiU consoles, Luigi U didn't shift consoles, 3DWorld didn't shift consoles...and their answer rather than "Hey lets try something NOT Mario" is "Well two Mario games and an expansion didn't work, lets try a third Mario game!".

The 'Mario Team' making a Mario game isn't exactly shocking. It's their job regardless, it's everything this particular group of people within the greater workforce employed by Nintendo do for a living. Nothing else.

Except the other games they've done...and only doing Mario does not mean they shouldn't do something else when Mario isn't drawing in crowds lie it once did.

There's others for other things.

Hopefully it's a proper 3d Mario and not a hybrid. We're already 4 years removed from the last true 3d Mario.

If it's actually being developed for Wii U, does this mean that they're planning on supporting the system until 2016? Perhaps "Mario Universe" will be the Wii U's swansong.

They woould be idiots to not support the Wii U for at least a normal 5-6 year cycle. The Wii U is not that far behind PS4/X1 in technology, it would be a total waste of money to spend all that money on a mid-generation console that was as powerful as ps4/x1 when the Wii U isn't that far behind. They'd be smarter to release a gamepad-less version of Wii U than a whole new console this soon.

I hope it's open world-ish like Super Mario 64.

It's probably going to be a 3DS title, I expect.

I am looking forward to seeing this on the App Store. You better deliver, Nintendo.
