Anyhow, I think plenty of last gen games look technically better than MK8.

For an apples to apples comparison, you'd have to compare to last gen Kart Racers, and MK8 blows them out of the water.

Outside of Mario Kart it's not a big genre, so comparing to other kart racers is very limited.

Just compare MK8 water with GTA V water... and GTA V is not like a "water game" it's a big open world sandbox game you can do so many things in, so it's technically harder to achieve high graphical quality than a closed circuit racer.

(Bunches of Pics)

Why are you comparing offscreen footage (MK8) to in-game (GTA V)?

Hes also comparing a Kart Racing game to a 265 million dollar open world game with a 5 year development cycle that consists of over 1,000 employees working on it (if wiki is to believe)... So the terrible picture is only one of his issues... quite hilarious if you ask me... Another person trying to downplay the game

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Why not?  I'm not comparing resolution.  Don't need a high res pic to see the technologies used.

MK8 water is using shader techniques possible since the original Xbox, but in HD.

I'm halfway expecting Red Dead Redemption screens next.

Am I the only one here who has actually seen Mario Kart 8 in action? I was at the Best Buy event last June and waited in line for two hours to play five minutes of 3D World. I got to watch multiple people play Mario Kart, and YES. Even back in June, that game looked amazing. It ran well. It blew me away. I keep saying that it is a Pixar movie in motion. Maybe you all think that it isn't 'technically' impressive. All because it doesn't do 1080p? Because 60fps isn't a joke. To get that level of detail running that smoothly is a technical achievement. Okay, let's see the Xbox guys try optimizing their fictional kart series for Xbox One, get it to look that good, and run at 60fps.

How many 60fps games are on Wii U already? How about the Bone or the PS4? I will take 720p, 60fps over 1080p, laggy crap that drops to 15 fps (Dead Rising 3, cough cough) every day of the week. Every. Day. A developer can do their best to show off all they want, but no one can argue that Nintendo has the best polish on their games, ESPECIALLY (emphasized to the extreme) in the gameplay department, which is the core of any game.

MK8 water, with technology straight out of 2001 ( with more primary colors )

Splashdown on original Xbox.

Anyhow, I'm done because I guess this will be dismissed again.

You will be dismissed, because you're comparing off-screen to onscreen.

In an apples to apples comparison, MK8 smokes its PS360 competition, (Modnation Racers/LBP Karting/Sonic All Stars/Sonic Transformed) which suffer from lower framerates, screen tearing, lower resolution textures, flatter lighting, etc.

@ICStats

You are comparing a snapshot directly taken from a console with off screen picture... Your comparison is invalid, also there is a huge difference between these two games, GTA IV has ten times more resources invested in money, labor and nearly four times in development than Mario Kart 8... The difference is huge.

Are you really expecting some miracle? Nintendo just started doing HD in comparison to arockstar who uses same engine for 7 years and continually improve it for HD twins. If they were to adapt and optimize their engine for Wii U then I bet GTA V on Wii U would do the game justice... Twice as detailed textures, less obvious pop ups and better lightning and shadowing with improved geometry here and there...

You should be comparing Little Big Planet Kart with Mario Kart 8... Oh. You probably think it is somehow unfair to compare two games in same genre?

Does that change the technology used in the game?  No.
