Forums - Gaming - Amazon Fire TV announced -game, movie streaming hardware

Unfortunately, this almost definitely means that Amazon prime videos are not coming to android or getting chromecast support.

This seems completely useless if you own any sort of entertainment device.

That is like saying Xbox is useless because Playstation existed and that Android and Windows Phones are useless because the iPhone existed.

Not sure I agree with your statement.

Amazon has a streaming app on just about every single device you can connect to your TV to include the TV itself. Why would I spend $99 for something that three other devices I already own can do the same thing? Unless Amazon plans on killing support for the consoles, HDTVs, stand-alone streaming boxes etc. I can't see myself purchasing one of these.

What exactly will make this stand out in the crowd of already connected devices?

It's $99 and has a bunch of $1 games which can be shared with tablets and phones ... a lot of parents may lean towards getting their kids this over a dedicated $300+ console with $60 games.

Not if their kid says, "No Mom I wanted a [insert console here] like the rest of my friends!" That was a rationale for the Ouya and we all know what has happened to that. Granted this is Amazon.

I guess I can see this maybe being a niche product for the uninitiated Prime members looking for a simpler streaming device to watch their content on the TV. Though they most likely have an Amazon app on said TV so I just don't see where this really truly fits.

Lots of kids prefer smartphone games. I know veteran hardcore gamers want to stomp their feet about that, but it's simpy true, walk into any Apple store at lunch time and the place is absolutely swamped with kids playing games on the iPad displays.

Ouya is a dinky little garage start up, Amazon is a billion dollar company that goes toe to toe with the likes of Apple. Just a tiny difference there.

Not only $1 games, each day one paid app (premium versions without in-app-ads) is free. Today Sonic CD for example ($6.99 for Ouya) or The Bard's Tale last week... and these games will probably get support for the FireTV-controller soon.

Apparently any Bluetooth controller will work with this thing too, so I guess Dual Shock 3/4 would work with it.

Why would anyone who already owns a smartphone buy such a device? Seriously, I don't get it. A MHL cable is way cheaper.

Yes, you can access Amazon Instant Video with many different devices... I tried it on my SmartTV, my Blu-ray-player, my PS3, my PS4, my Wii U, my iPad and my Kindle Fire.

The thing is... it works best on the Kindle Fire. For example, if you continue a movie or tv-episode, the stream starts much faster... probably it gets buffered instantly when you turn on the device. When you tap on the screen, you get more information than on the other devices (the name of the episode / movie) and a button to jump directly to the next episode:

For comparison, here is the iPad-interface of that app:

And the whole Kindle-GUI is content-based and not application-based, which can be very conveniant for consuming content.

When you start the device, the last content you played/watched/read/listened to is in the focus. Just tap on it and you can just continue where you left:

Or you can tap on the words on the top of the display and jump to your games, apps, music library, instant video, photos or documents on the device... from there just tap on them and they start the standard app, there are also the buttons "cloud" or "shop" available to download or buy additional stuff.

Sure, you can install and start other media-apps and then search and open the content you want within them, but Amazon has made the process to get to your content very streamlined and convenient.

The first batch of controllers apparently has sold out, so looks like a few people are jumping on already.

Looks interesting. I'm impressed that they're developing first party content. They can definitely carve out a market for this - if they go about it the right way.

I think I'll get one. I wish they had called it Jungle, though.

Edit: Apparently other bluetooth controllers will work ith the Amazon Fire TV - you don't necessarily need the Amazon Fire Game Controller.

"The Fire TV features 2 GB of RAM and a dedicated GPU, which Amazon said is the kind "usually found in smartphones." The device's UI includes sections for movies, television, apps and photos in addition to games."

So, basically an Ouya?

Not close to Ouya.

This will have major support as an example that Minecraft exists and likely future other large games.

Amazon is not small slouch. They'll push this big time with large software support from not only games, but also movies, etc.

This is a lot closer to a solid Android tv device.
