Not sure I agree with your statement.
Amazon has a streaming app on just about every single device you can connect to your TV to include the TV itself. Why would I spend $99 for something that three other devices I already own can do the same thing? Unless Amazon plans on killing support for the consoles, HDTVs, stand-alone streaming boxes etc. I can't see myself purchasing one of these.
What exactly will make this stand out in the crowd of already connected devices?

It's $99 and has a bunch of $1 games which can be shared with tablets and phones ... a lot of parents may lean towards getting their kids this over a dedicated $300+ console with $60 games.

Not if their kid says, "No Mom I wanted a [insert console here] like the rest of my friends!" That was a rationale for the Ouya and we all know what has happened to that. Granted this is Amazon.
I guess I can see this maybe being a niche product for the uninitiated Prime members looking for a simpler streaming device to watch their content on the TV. Though they most likely have an Amazon app on said TV so I just don't see where this really truly fits.

Lots of kids prefer smartphone games. I know veteran hardcore gamers want to stomp their feet about that, but it's simpy true, walk into any Apple store at lunch time and the place is absolutely swamped with kids playing games on the iPad displays.
Ouya is a dinky little garage start up, Amazon is a billion dollar company that goes toe to toe with the likes of Apple. Just a tiny difference there.
