VR wouldn't be a bad route for Nintendo to have gone down, the problem is Sony is already moving on this first, so it's probably too late. And then you throw Facebook into the mix with the giant cash backing and it probably doesn't make sense any more. Nintendo is not good at playing catch up.

Virtual Boy 2 honestly probably would've sold better than a Wii U had it released in 2011, just because the technology has caught up to the idea, in 1995, it was laughably impractical as the graphics tech simply wasn't there yet.

In hindsight I think if Nintendo knew back in 2010/11 that the Wii U was going to be such a dud, they probably would have explored the idea of VR more back then. It certainly would have instantly made their system stand apart from anything else on the market for a minimum of 3 years.

I don't know.  Hasn't Nintendo almost always played catch up?  Most of their home consoles a year or more after the competition main competition.

No! This VR stuff will fail because it is no mass market product because it will be to expensive!!! These VR things are born to die!!!

I own one, and I say nope.

Well, the (idea of the) Virtual Boy was ahead of its time and thus the product wasn't really suited for the mass market, which resulted in the problems it had. I also heard that Yokoi, who invented the thing, didn't want it to be made in the state it was in, but Nintendo pushed forward anyway. And there were some other big mistakes made by Nintendo (relating the system to their portable line when it really isn't portable, or not having a headstrap, for example).

A "Virtual Boy 2" would only be a Virtual Boy in name, since technology has come so far since then. I think the idea is not the worst of all, though I'm not sure if the VR thing will catch on as much and as quickly as some people think. I vote for yes, though.

To be honest, I had a lot of fun with it, its just hard on the eyes, with the dark black and bright red for a few hours will blind you for a moment when you take it off. I always used it on the virtual boy stand on my computer desk and it was comfy enough.

A high tech device like that is completely against Nintendo's current business model. Never gonna happen!

Not only should they make a new Virtual Boy, they should also make a new Power glove as the controller! That's VR with built in motion controls!

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I know you don't like Nintendo but just for the sake of this thread, all I will say is they will never do it cause they hate doing the same thing their competitors are doing.

And yet they still ended up begrudgingly adopting dual analogs, analog triggers, western dev houses, online play, digital distribution, indie game catering, etc etc etc.

VR is still way too costly atm both in terms of the the necessary materials for the headset itself (not the least of which being the high res, high refresh rate screens in a small area) and for the hardware required to run modern looking games (doubly so for Nintendo considering what they output in 2D doesn't even look modern), so obviously Nintendo has no need to enter the field ATM and would probably kill themselves doing so. Sony will probably treat it as a very minor side thing for this gen like they did dual analogs in the PS1 era, the Eyetoy in the PS2 era, and motion controls in the PS3 era. Microsoft will probably do the same a little later.

Still, these are just the early seeds being sown, there's simply no avoiding the VR end game long term any more than there was avoiding online play (which itself is far less significant long term).

Nintendo will resist with all their might like they do all technological progress, but eventually the time will come when they will have to fold or sign their death warrant to the not so distant future. If Nintendo is still around in 30 years, they will have submitted to the VR future in some form or fashion.

Ninty could do it almost for free, it should just exhume all those million Virtual Boys from that secret landfill, paint them brown and rotten green (if they didn't already turn naturally to those colours, that is) and rebadge them as "Zombie Boy". Bundled with a special edition of Resident Evil or Zombie U they'd sell like hot cakes! Er, actually like dead cold cakes.

Uhh why? The 3DS already does what the VB attempted to do... add a "glasses free" 3D effect to 2D games.... only now with less headaches and actual portability.

VR is not just a simple 3d effect tho. You cant compare the 3DS to an actual VR system its totally different.

I know that, my post was meant to illustrate that the original Virtual Boy was anything but VR, and that the 3DS basically does the same thing the VB did only way better, so there's no need for Nintendo to attempt to make a VB2 because they already have it in essence.  I wish they would do more augmented reality stuff... I'd much rather that be put to good use than another failed attempt at a VR headset.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

They should look into the hardware, but if they call it Virtual Boy 2 they might as well kill it now.
