And yet they still ended up begrudgingly adopting dual analogs, analog triggers, western dev houses, online play, digital distribution, indie game catering, etc etc etc.
VR is still way too costly atm both in terms of the the necessary materials for the headset itself (not the least of which being the high res, high refresh rate screens in a small area) and for the hardware required to run modern looking games (doubly so for Nintendo considering what they output in 2D doesn't even look modern), so obviously Nintendo has no need to enter the field ATM and would probably kill themselves doing so. Sony will probably treat it as a very minor side thing for this gen like they did dual analogs in the PS1 era, the Eyetoy in the PS2 era, and motion controls in the PS3 era. Microsoft will probably do the same a little later.
Still, these are just the early seeds being sown, there's simply no avoiding the VR end game long term any more than there was avoiding online play (which itself is far less significant long term).
Nintendo will resist with all their might like they do all technological progress, but eventually the time will come when they will have to fold or sign their death warrant to the not so distant future. If Nintendo is still around in 30 years, they will have submitted to the VR future in some form or fashion.
