Virtual Boy 2 honestly probably would've sold better than a Wii U had it released in 2011, just because the technology has caught up to the idea, in 1995, it was laughably impractical as the graphics tech simply wasn't there yet.

In hindsight I think if Nintendo knew back in 2010/11 that the Wii U was going to be such a dud, they probably would have explored the idea of VR more back then. It certainly would have instantly made their system stand apart from anything else on the market for a minimum of 3 years. 

I don't know.  Hasn't Nintendo almost always played catch up?  Most of their home consoles a year or more after the competition main competition.
