Forums - Gaming - 7th and 8th gen Hardware Comparison

I thought/was hoping that this was a comparison of hardware capabilities between the PS3/PS4, Xbox 360/Xbox One, and Wii/Wii U.

All of the 8th gen consoles seem to have cut a lot of functions (and added too, obviously) from their previous iterations.

Handhelds are massively down. Nintendo is massively down. Developers are continuing to go out of business. Developers are continuing to move franchises to mobile/ free to play.

A lot of negativity, where PS4 and Xbox One are trending to be the only positives. Even then, one of those 2 platforms is having extremely bad sales outside of 2 countries.

Things arent exactly horrific, but they could be a lot better.

You won't know this until the end of the year ... It's way too early to even say. While the PS4 maybe holding up pretty well so far to the WII and the X1 is starting to atleast gain some momentum but we still don't know how it will perform in the 2nd quarter or the 3rd quarter of the year.

Between 31/3 and 30/6 2007, Wii averaged about 260000-270000 consoles per week. That is what the top two consoles in 8th gen are doing COMBINED at the moment. I might be overly pessimistic, but maintain that it doesn´t look great. Hopefully games like Titanfall and Infamous can start to turn that tide.

I noticed that you just glanced over handhelds. They represent a huge contraction in the market with both entrants heavily down. If those were included the failure picture might seem a bit more apparent.

8th gen is ahead, but not really by that much. Still, a gen ahead of the Wii is really good.

You've already answered your question right there. Take a look at the people who insist that the 8th gen is a failure.

I've only seen a few Nintendo fans say it. It's really only the Nintendo console that is failing compared to the previous gen. The others are doing better to WAY better in PS4's case.

talk,talk,talk...stop please and do some research. Wii U numbers are actually up from 2013 not down. If you are a real gamer you want all gaming companies to survive. If you are Fanboy you only want a certain company to survive. grow up stop posting and play games

People are going to point to the fact that 7th gen sold over 260m hardware between the three home consoles, and that this generation is a failure if it contracts and sells less. This generation is inevitably going to have less sales. Tens of millions of people bought a Wii that have no interest in buying consoles again plus this generation will almost certainly be shorter.

I agree with your post, overall the home console market looks healthy right now, and hopefully Wii U can improve and start pulling it's weight.

Why do you think it will be a shorter generation? If anything I get the sense 7-8 years could become the new normal and could even see companies try to stretch it out more.

I think (and hope) it will be shorter because the gaming industry is moving faster and faster.  There's the rise of mobile and tablet, PC gaming is forging ahead, there is steam machines and possibly an Amazon console and now VR and AR technology.  I think Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft may have to adapt quicker than before and I don't see how they can do that with another 8 year generation with the same hardware.

Well that is partly because the huge holiday it had.  As i said every console last gen nearly doubled their first holiday.  Wii alone sold over 4m in december.  If that happens again both PS4 and XBO shoudl sell at least 2m+ in december.

the demand argument gets pretyt funny when viewing thse numbers
