Forums - Gaming Discussion - So when was the last time a game really blew you away?

Tagged games:

Legend of Heroes: Trails in the sky.

The story, combat, music, and the characters... this game really surprised me. I've never been more hyped for a sequel until I finished this game.

Estelle and Adol... best characters ever! XD

Blew me away, as in I was very impressed by the game and perhaps did not think it would be that good, I will give examples of some of the first games that comes to my mind.

Shadow of the Colossus(PS2). I had not played ICO before SotC and did not know much of this game. All I knew was that it's a game from a pretty small studio and the game looked interesting. But surely this game really "blew me away". Really loved it. And while I played ICO after SotC it didn't blow me away or anything. If I had played ICO before SotC the tables could have been turned, most likely.

Uncharted 1(PS3). Surely this studio had a lot of years on it's history, and some already famous franchises like Crash and Jak. But Uncharted really gave me a great experience. And while I enjoy Uncharted 2, 3 and The Last of Us more than Uncharted 1, with the other three games I more or less expected to be "blown away", so I wasn't. I just got what I expected more or less.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time(N64). While I really enjoyed the other previous Zelda games this first step into the 3D-world and the great story really blew me away. Such a great game and pretty much still one my favourite games of all time.

Banjo Kazooie(N64). Did not know much about this studio and then this game popped up. Didn't expect anything from it but it was so good. And while I enjoy Banjo Tooie more, I expected it to be better, so it didn't blow me away or anything.

Battlefield 2(PC). While I had plated BF 1942 but didn't like it too much really, it was good but not great in my opinion, this game(BF2) really surprised me how great it was when it came. Such an awesome game until the latest updates where they removed some of the best, as they described them, bugs. The ability to duck and shoot fast and then get up again.

Battlefield 3(PC). Since I thought that BF 2124 really sucked in comparison to BF2, this game once again blew me away. I thought that the online multiplayer kind of sucked, or at best was average, but the single player campaign was awesome. Truly awesome.

And there are a lot of other games that blew me away, but I kind of expected them to be great. As Resident Evil 4, I expected it to be a great game. Perhaps I didn't expect it to be the best in the series ever kind of great, but still great. And same goes with Metal Gear Solid 4.

Zelda: Minish Cap(GBA). I didn't expect it to be as good as it actually was. I didn't enjoy Capcom's previous Zelda's this much so yeah this game kind of blew me away too.

In the Next Gen/Current Gen(Wii U, PS4, X1)-era, nothing has blown me away as of yet.

Good list.  I played them all, except Battlefield.  I especially agree with Minish Cap. I restartrd that game several times for months.  Just couldn't get into it and figured it would suck.  I stuck with it eventually and it just clicked.  For the next several days, nothing else mattered.  Totally didn't expect it to be one of my favorite games that year.

Mark of the ninja. Just a few weeks ago. Seriously, I can't believe how awesome that game is.

Another one I fully agree with.  I don't know what I was expecting but this game totally knocked it out of the park.  I'm gonna have to do another playthrough soon!

Recently a game that blew me away was Kid Icarus: Uprising.

League of Legends I guess. I was like meh I guess I will play it since it is free. Now I play it most days and have had great fun with it.

Console wise?

Last one would be Uncharted 2. The reason it blew me away is because I thought it was extremely overhyped and it kept getting number 1 in PS3 games. I played the demo and got annoyed at platforming and did not go much further then that. When I finally got the game one day and played through it, it blew me away at how great of a game it actually was.

Just hours ago when I put Infamous SS on my PS4, the game looks STUNNING!

Going back a long time, I would probably have to say: Elite and Doom.
Those two represent the 80s and 90s.

South Park The Stick of Truth. It's basically a perfect video game for fans of South Park and RPGs.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

The Last of Us.

This is the Game of Thrones

Where you either win

or you DIE

Since where listing more than one game I’ll do few more from last gen( can't do all of them there’s to many).

Mass effect 1(never played 2 or 3 was put off by the simplified rpg elements and lack of exploration)
Mass effect one was of my first rpg's this gen and having never played a western rpg before this game with its branching story, conversation system and freedom to explore the universe as I saw fit was quite mind blowing at the time. Then mass effect 2 came out and I thought that it must have been made by epic at first.

Red dead redemption
Having played GTA 4 previously and been seriously disappointed I was very relieved to see that Rockstar can still make a kick ass story and overall highly addictive game.

Blue dragon trilogy
The first blue dragon was my first Console JRPG of this generation and it didn’t disappoint I was really pleased to see that Mistwalker had it in them to be the new Sqauresoft ( R.I.P Sqaureesoft).

Fallout 3
My second western rpg of the generation and my first Bethesda game as you can imagine what below me why here is the post-apocalyptic world and atmosphere. also the ability to kill virtually any NPC was a very aspect of the game.

Borderlands 1&2
These two games where unexpectedly two of the lastt generations games I have played this gen with the 4 player co-op (everything’s better with co-op in my opinion) and looting madness.

New super Mario bros( DS&Wii)
never was two keen on the older 2d Mario’s was always more of a 3d Mario 2d sonic man for platformers but theses games changed my mind completely.

Monster hunter Tri
The online co-op made this game one of my favourite games last gen.

Kingdom hearts birth by sleep & Final Mix
Big kingdom hearts fan and had been waiting for birth by sleep since the secret endings of kh 2. It turned out be my favourite in the series with the three intertwining stories and local Wi-Fi arena.

Monster hunter freedom(1,2,Unite)
My introduction to the monster series and some of my favourite co-op games.
