Forums - Sony - Digital Foundry Performance analysis: inFamous: Second Son

Yep the game is fantastic looking. Can't wait for the more linear Uncharted, and I'm assuming the Order will be similarly linear and gameplay I've seen of that looks better than inFamous.

I'm also looking forward to seeing what developers do with the non-realistic looking games. Valkyria chronicles was soooo cool visually on PS3 and those sorts of creative uses of graphics are also what can really set one generation apart from another.

I don't understand why they just didn't lock it at 30 FPS, seems strange to me.

I suppose to lock it they would need to use double or tripple buffering, which adds to the input lag. In a 30fps game that can be 67-100ms of additional lag, if they buffer up to 3 frames, but if they buffer less the 30 will be less consistent.

They are using triple buffering. That's why you never see any screen tearing. Almost all PS4 games have triple buffering. The problem with triple buffering is that you need a lot of fast ram but PS4 has a 100% unified fast pool of memory so no problem for this console. Also triple buffering does need more GPU grunt too.

The unlocking does improve input lag, even if your game is running at 35fps it's better than 30fps.

The graphics seem to be very good and I can safely say that Second Son showcases nicely what the PS4 can do graphics-wise ( specially since the game is open world and not linear)!

this game is hands down the best looking and technical game out.

Certainly on consoles yes it really looks amazing. Not near the most technical game if you take PC into account but that doesnt really matter, im super impressed with what Ive seen of Second Son. PS4 games in 2 or so years are going to be beautiful.

Yeah that' s what i meant lol.

I've noticed frame rate drops a few times to many (only with smoke though so far). It has detracted from the experience for me. Also got stuck inside a wall/building then fell below to my death. Apart from those issues I've been impressed with the graphics, even wanting to stop during combat to look at the environment.

lol I also got stuck in a wall and fell to my death, it was kinda weird. I've only noticed fps drops once or twice after playing for 6 hours though.

"This is one of the best post-process anti-aliasing techniques we've seen" - Agreed. I barely notice jaggies at all.

They should allow people to limit the FPS to 30 imo.

I agree, would keep it consistent instead of juddering like it looks now.

I'm very surprised by the level of destruction in this game.

It's introducing motion judder though, it would be perfect to do what GG did in KZ SF, give the player the option to choose whether they prefer better input lag and leave the framerate unlocked, or decrease the motion judder and use v-sync to lock the framerate at 30fps.

KZ didn't have it at first as well, it was patched later on, so I hope inFamous will have it patched as well.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

THE GAMES FPS is pretty smooth most of the time but with my experience ,, they were quite alot of places with noticeable slowdown
