Miyamoto does not use focus groups. Instead, Miyamoto figures out if a game is fun for himself. He says that if he enjoys it, others will too. He then tests it with friends and family. Miyamoto wants players to experience kyokan; he wants "the players to feel about the game what the developers felt themselves.

A simple look at sales tells us that is not what gamers want.

Thus the question remains if he ever was thinking about retiring why not at the low point. Let new guys take the wheel.

in other words he has lost touch for years, so let him enjoy fishing and eating pizza while retired.

What sales are we looking at here?

declining hardware/software all around

And how does Shigeru Miyamoto tie into this? Last I checked, he was only responsible for 2 games. Pikmin 3 and New Super Mario Bros. U (including DLC). Pikmin 3 selling 730k and NSMBU selling 3.74 million - with Luigi U selling 1.37 million.

Shigeru Miyamoto was, is, and will probably always be the best video game creator this industry has ever seen.

He's earned the right to do whatever he wants to do, including retiring according to his own schedule and on his own terms.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

I really want him to go out with a bang though. Create one more legendary IP before retiring. Maybe an IP so good it puts the Wii U back on track.

It would be a shame for Miyamoto to retire after this. The guy is THE greatest game developer ever, period, no debate. He needs to ride off in the sunset on a high note.

Looks like you are also a person that needs a good smack on the back of his head. There's no such thing as earning the right to run Nintendo into the ground. You might as well say that a person who has saved the lives of 20 people has earned the right to kill those very same people (or 20 random people of his choice) without any sort of punishment.

oh my god, we just agreed on something

You mean the sales that have been declining ever since he took on a less active role around 2010 or 2011?

Seriously, Miyamoto's been a pretty hands-off guy for Nintendo for a while now. The only two notable games that beared his mark in 2013 were Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and his pet project, Pikmin 3. The former was a big hit and the latter, though not a sales monster, was critically sucessful and far from a flop. Games like Super Mario 3D World, Wind Waker HD, and Wii Fit and Party U had little to no input from him, and were hits and misses regardless of him. And last year, I think the only two games he got his name on were the Wii U launch games, which were critically decently received and are the best-selling games for the platform by far.

The closest thing Miyamoto has gotten to "not getting gamers" in recent years was putting his name on the overpriced 3DS launch title Steel Diver. Besides that, I'm not exactly sure what brush you're smearing him with. Especially since a lot of Nintendo's problems with the Wii U can be traced to its attempting to reach out to 3rd parties, something that Miyamoto had nothing to do with.

If anything, I think Miyamoto should take on a more active role when possible. I understand that he's mentoring a bunch of younger people right now, but I think that if given a medium-sized studio to work with, he could have a more hands on role and create, say, one last great IP before retiring.

That's hardly an apt analogy. Miyamoto is responsible for Nintendo's greatness. Heck, his creations are responsible for the modern video game industry. I don't see how a recent downturn in sales and profits erases 30 years of masterful video game design.

I'd say let the man be in charge as long as it lasts. Trust me, he'll retire soon enough and when he's gone, we're just gonna realise what guy the gaming industry has just lost.

Miyamoto is over 60 and his best years are well and truly behind him. Great years in the 1980s and 1990s for video games but the quality of the games seems to have stagnated over the last few years. An injection of youth and a new direction is probably needed to take the classic Nintendo First Party IPs into a new era. Miyamoto has created and developed countless games for Nintendo over the last 30 years.

How exactly is Miyamoto responsible for every decision Nintendo makes ? I completely agree with Veknoid here. He has earned the right to work on whatever he wants, or retire if he feels it's time. He has done more for Nintendo than anyone else, and any recent mistake that you could attribute to him will never erase that.

Besides, Miyamoto has already stated that he's thinking about his eventual retirement and is training younger developers to fill his role in the future. And there's no evidence of him having lost touch with gamers, just opinions.
